DHAKA: Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhter has appealed for increased support from stakeholders, including the United Nations, to enhance the development of Bangladesh's livestock, fisheries, environment, and agriculture sectors. This call for assistance was made to ensure the country's financial growth and sustainable development. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Farida Akhter made the appeal during a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, at her Secretariat office. The meeting focused on the cooperation needed from the UN for sectors such as 'One Health' and 'Blue Economy', as highlighted in a ministry press release. During the discussions, Gwyn Lewis recognized Bangladesh's efforts and achievements, stating that the country has become a regional role model in 'One Health' by implementing various effective measures. She assured increased cooperation from the UN as Farida Akhter emphasized the need for support from UN organizations for sustainable development ini tiatives. The UN Resident Coordinator also expressed concerns over Bangladesh's vulnerability to zoonotic diseases, which pose a risk due to the country's extensive borders with India and Myanmar. These diseases, caused by pathogens such as Ebola and HIV, can spread from animals and birds to humans, necessitating increased preventive measures. The meeting was attended by Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Sayeed Mahmood Belal Haider, Additional Secretary ATM Mostofa Kamal, and UN Senior Human Rights Adviser to Bangladesh Huma Khan, among others.
