KALIA: A farmer was killed and five others were injured in a clash between two rival groups of people at Chandpur village in Purulia union under Kalia upazila of the district last night. The deceased was identified as farmer Sultan Mollah, 70, son of Alek Mollah of Chandpur village. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, locals reported that the activists of union parishad member Zamal Hossain clashed with supporters of his rival Shariful Islam over establishing supremacy in Chandpur village at around 10:30pm on Monday. Officer in charge of Kalia police station, Md Rashedul Islam, stated that during the clash, Sultan Mollah sustained severe wounds when supporters of Shariful Islam attacked him with lethal weapons. Sultan Mollah was taken to Narail Sadar Hospital where the duty doctor declared him dead. The injured individuals were admitted to various hospitals in Narail for treatment. OC Md Rashedul Islam confirmed that police and army personnel quickly arrived at the scene to bring the law and order si tuation under control.
