RANGPUR, Bangladesh Press Council (BPC) Chairman Justice

Md Nizamul Haque Nasim today said the political life of Father of the Nation

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was made worthwhile by coming into the

contact of journalists.

“The advice and massive publicity of the journalists accelerated

Bangabandhu’s movement and Bangladesh became independent with the inspiration

of the journalists society,” he said.

He was addressing a training workshop on “Prevention of yellow journalism and

objective journalism” organized by BPC at Rangpur Circuit House conference

room with the participation of 50 journalists from print and electronic media

as the chief guest.

Justice Nizamul said Bangabandhu thought it necessary to bring journalist

society under a legal framework. So he passed the Press Council Act on

February 14, 1974.

“Accordingly, BPC was established on August 18, 1979 following the Press

Council Act. The main goal of establishing BPC was to ensure the freedom of

the press, improve and preserve the quality of the press,” he said.

The BPC Chairman said the journalist community of Bangladesh could not work

independently at one time. There was no separate law for journalists during

the British and Pakistan eras.

“If a journalist files wrong, false or unfair reporting and if any person

becomes affected by this reporting and files a case in the Press Council,

then the council investigates the case and punishes the guilty,” he said.

He called upon the journalists to publish true, objective and newsworthy

news.

Addressing the workshop as a resource person, BPC Secretary (Additional

Secretary) Shyamal Chandra Karmaker said yellow journalists spread news

without following any rules and regulations and create instability in the

society.

“BPC will take necessary action against them,” he said, adding that

journalists should maintain vocabulary, language and sense of decency.

Credible, true and objective news should be disseminated alongside preventing

spreading lies or rumors.

Rangpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance) Md.

Tariqul Islam, Assistant Director of Rangpur District Information Office Md

Alamgir Kabir, senior officers of different offices attended the training

workshop.
