Dhaka: The 90th birth anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a pivotal figure in the establishment of multi-party democracy in Bangladesh, was commemorated today with due solemnity and respect.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the day began with the hoisting of party flags at the central and local BNP offices nationwide. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, accompanied by central leaders including Mirza Abbas, Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, and others, paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman by placing wreaths at his mausoleum at Zia Udyan in the capital. A special prayer, or Fatiha, was also offered for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
During a discussion with journalists, Mirza Fakhrul emphasized the BNP’s unwavering commitment to a liberal democratic Bangladesh, drawing inspiration from Ziaur Rahman’s leadership. Events such as discussions and dua mahfils were organized by BNP and its affiliates across the country to honor his legacy. Additionally, the Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh held a medical camp in his memory.
A central discussion is scheduled for tomorrow at the Institution of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh auditorium, featuring senior BNP leaders and national figures. National dailies published special supplements highlighting Ziaur Rahman’s contributions to the nation.
Ziaur Rahman, remembered for his role as the proclaimer of Bangladesh’s independence and an architect of modern Bangladesh, was born on January 19, 1936, in Bogura. His leadership during the Liberation War, particularly as the commander of the “Z Force,” is revered for its significant impact on the nation’s history.
Throughout his life, Ziaur Rahman demonstrated an unwavering commitment to democratic values and patriotism. He assumed the presidency on April 21, 1977, and was elected on June 23, 1978. During his presidency, he ended the one-party BAKSAL rule and restored freedom of the press, significantly shaping the political landscape of Bangladesh.
His assassination on May 30, 1981, marked a tragic end to a life of dedicated public service, but his contributions continue to be celebrated and remembered with deep respect.
