Dhaka: The government has reported significant progress in its initiative to prepare for major disasters, particularly earthquakes, with 70,000 volunteers already trained for emergency response. State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief, M Iqbal Hossain, highlighted these efforts during a session in the Jatiya Sangsad, responding to a query from lawmaker Nilufar Chowdhury Moni.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the government's plan includes building a robust pool of 100,000 volunteers equipped to handle rescue operations in the wake of disasters. State Minister Hossain emphasized the government's proactive stance in enhancing disaster preparedness, stating that the training programs are designed to ensure effective management and execution of rescue operations during emergencies.
In addressing the availability of rescue equipment, State Minister Hossain noted that the government has procured and distributed various essential tools among key agencies such as the Bangladesh Army, Fire Service, and Ansar. The procurement process for additional equipment is ongoing, with tenders underway to ensure all necessary resources are available.
Furthermore, the government has compiled an inventory of disaster-response equipment available within the private sector. State Minister Hossain mentioned plans to collaborate with private institutions, utilizing their resources when necessary to bolster the nation's disaster response capabilities.
