7 missing after fishing vessel sinks in Karnaphuli River

Seven people are missing after a fishing vessel sank in the Karnaphuli River of Chattogram earlier today.

 

The accident happened around 1:30am when the vessel ‘MV Magferat’ was trying to dock for maintenance at Ichhanagar village under Karnaphuli upazila.

 

Though nine people including the chief engineer managed to swim to the shore soon after the vessel capsized, seven crew members including the captain went missing.

 

Those who were rescued are the vessel’s chief engineer Mohammad Solaiman, Assistant Engineer Aslam, Greaser Md Monir, sailors Bashar, Anwar, Rakib, Bachhu and Saidul, and identity of another could not be known.

The missing are the vessel’s Chief Officer Md Saiful Islam, Second Engineer Jahirul Islam, Captain Faruk Bin Abdullah, Greaser Prodip Chowdhury, Fish Master Md Jahir Uddin, Dock Member Rahmat Mia and name of another missing member could not be known.

 

Mohammad Ekram Ullah, officer-in-charge of Sadarghat River Police Station, said that a joint team of river police and fire service and civil defense was conducting rescue operation, adding that the divers faced difficulty due to high tide.
