Shyampur:A slum in the IG Gate area of Shyampur, identified by police as a major drug peddling hub, has been evicted in a three-day operation with police assistance.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Dhaka South City Corporation, with support from Shyampur Model Police Station, conducted the eviction from September 26 to 28. Police have long claimed that an organized group operated drug sales in and around the colony, disrupting local residents and raising concerns about criminal activities.
The proximity of several educational institutions heightened concerns about students' exposure to drugs. Shyampur police have been conducting anti-drug drives and intelligence operations, targeting locations allegedly used for drug-related activities.
Illegal structures used by drug dealers were removed with city corporation authorities' help, aiming to dismantle the infrastructure supporting drug activities. Police data indicate that 29 drug-related cases were filed in the area between 2025 and September 2026, alongside two cases of attacks on police and 251 mobile court drives.
A total of 389 people have been sentenced in connection with these operations. Local residents, parents, and teachers have welcomed the eviction, emphasizing its importance for student and community safety. Police stated that surveillance and anti-drug operations would persist to prevent a resurgence of drug-related activities.
