Dhaka: At least 50 percent of the construction work for the extended section of the Motijheel to Kamalapur metro rail has been completed as authorities aim to finish the 1.16-kilometer project by next year. The physical work for this section of the Dhaka Metro Rail project is progressing rapidly, as confirmed by Project Director of Metro Line-6, Md Zakaria, in a statement to BSS today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the Motijheel to Kamalapur section is the current focus of intense construction efforts. The project director mentioned that agreements for setting up the electric and mechanical systems are underway. "We are working to sign an agreement with a contractor for installing the Electrical Mechanical (E and M) system in June this year, aiming to complete the extension part of the metro next year," Zakaria added. Once the agreement is finalized, the contractor will proceed with installing the track and signaling system for the section.
Project details reveal significant progress, with 37 out of 39 pillars for the metro station already erected. The remaining pillars are set for rapid completion. The construction of all station columns has been completed, and all 298 precast segments have been finished at the construction yard. Additionally, eight out of 27 spans have been installed, a 180-meter long concourse floor has been completed, and 90 out of 180-meter track slabs have been finished. The manufacturing of all 824 precast parapet walls is also complete.
The project director emphasized the active pace of construction at the Kamalapur Metro Station and the viaduct connecting Motijheel-Kamalapur. The metro rail project, Bangladesh's first Mass Rapid Transit Line, spans an elevated route from Uttara-Diabari-Mirpur-Farmgate-Motijheel-Kamalapur, totaling 21.26 kilometers. The country's first metro rail, Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6, has been operating from Uttara to Motijheel since November 2023. Initially designed as an elevated line from Uttara to Motijheel, a skywalk was later planned to connect the line with Kamalapur Railway Station.
