3-Day Programme Announced to Celebrate Rokeya Day at Pairaband.

RANGPUR: The district administration has unveiled a comprehensive three-day programme to commemorate Begum Rokeya Day 2024 at her birthplace in Pairaband village, located in Mithapukur upazila. This annual event celebrates the legacy of Begum Rokeya, a pioneering advocate for women’s rights and education.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the observance will commence on December 9, with a ceremony to honor Begum Rokeya by placing wreaths at the Begum Rokeya Smritistambha in Pairaband village. The day will also feature the hoisting of the national flag and the inauguration of the Rokeya Fair at 9 am. The first day’s schedule includes a milad mahfil, screenings of documentary films, a blood donation drive, and blood group testing, culminating in a discussion and vibrant cultural events.

The activities on December 10 will focus on engaging students through drawing, poetry recitation, essay writing, and debate competitions. Additionally, there will be screenings of films centered on women empowerment. T
hese events aim to inspire the younger generation by highlighting the significant contributions of Begum Rokeya.

On December 11, the final day, the programme will conclude with the final rounds of the debate competitions, followed by a discussion session at the Government Begum Rokeya Memorial College ground. The day will also include the distribution of prizes and medals, alongside cultural performances in Pairaband village.

Begum Rokeya, born on December 9, 1880, in Pairaband, Rangpur, dedicated her life to championing women’s rights, education, and empowerment. Her efforts against the prevailing conservative norms of the British-ruled colonial society in the sub-continent sparked a transformative renaissance. Since 1994, her birth and death anniversaries have been officially observed as Begum Rokeya Day in Pairaband village under Mithapukur upazila, ensuring her legacy continues to inspire future generations.
