Bagerhat: A 22-day nationwide ban on hilsa fishing commenced from midnight on Saturday, aimed at protecting mother hilsa during their breeding season.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, low pressure in the sea had already kept most fishermen ashore before the ban took effect, resulting in a disappointing catch. Over 50 trawlers returned to Bagerhat’s KB Bazar on Friday, but the hilsa supply fell short of expectations. Traders from various parts of the country rushed to procure fish before the ban was implemented.
Senior Fisheries Officer Rajkumar confirmed that the ban will be enforced until October 25. To support fishermen during this period, the government has allocated 25 kilograms of rice per family.
