Channel i lifted the BSJA Media-Cup trophy, beating T Sports by four wickets in the final game of the tournament, held at Paltan Outer Stadium today. A total of 32 media houses of the country took part in the tournament, organized by the Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association (BSJA), powered by Bashundhara Kings. After batting first, T Sports put up 88-2 in six overs, a target which Channel I gunned down in 4.2 overs, losing two wickets. Sazzad Khan who was adjudged man of the match, made highest 31 off 6. T Sports' Parvez was adjudged man of the tournament and best batter for his 139 runs and six wickets. Mostafiz Pranto of Business Standard took six wickets to be the best bowler. The champions were awarded a trophy and Tk 30,000 while the runners-up got Tk 15,000 along with trophy. 700 cold-affected distressed people get blankets in Rajshahi

Over 700 distressed people affected badly by the sweeping cold weather were given blankets today to mitigate their sufferings. Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and Awami League (AL) Presidium Member AHM Khairuzzaman Liton distributed the warm clothes on the premises of Shaheed AHM Kamaruzzaman Government Degree College this afternoon as the chief guest. Shoriful claims hat-trick to kick start BPL 10

The 10th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) kicked off in a grand style with fast bowler Shoriful Islam claiming a hat-trick in his side Durdanto Dhaka's match against defending champions Comilla Victorians today at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Shoriful who returned figures of 3-27, took all of his wickets in the last three balls of Comilla's innings. After conceding two sixes at the hands of Khushdil Shah in the second and third ball, he took the sweet revenge when he had Comilla's Pakistan recruit caught by Taskin. Later in the last two balls, he claimed the wicket of West Indies recruit Roston Chase and Mahidul Islam Ankon, helped by the fielders to become the seventh bowler in the tournament to claim hat-trick. Comilla eventually were restricted to 143-6. Pakistan's Mohammad Sami was the first bowler in BPL to slam a hat-trick in the first edition in 2012. So far three overseas players and four Bangladeshi players achieved the feat in this tournament. The first three hat-tricks were registered in Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur and then the next three were recorded at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram before Mirpur saw a hat-trick again thanks to Shoriful. Eight more countries greet Sheikh Hasina

United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Egypt, Luxemburg, Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia and Brazil congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on her re-election as the premier of Bangladesh for the 4th straight term. 240-youth getting skill development training in Rajshahi

Around 240 potential youths are being given skill development training for making them self-reliant through various income-generating activities. The beneficiary youths are being imparted training on four courses-- digital marketing for freelancing, graphics design for freelancing, web-design and development for freelancing and video editing and freelancing. On behalf of its "Employment Skill Development Institute", Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has been providing the four-month training since January 1 last. Established at the 10th floor of the city bhavan's annex building, the institute is conducting the courses for the interested people. RCC and National Skill Development Authority belonging to the Bangladesh Technical Education Board will provide certificates to each of the participants upon successful completion of the course. City Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton inspected the training activities along with sharing views with the participating youths and others concerned yesterday afterno on. Speaking on the occasion, Mayor Liton said they established the institute for creating skilled human resources through training. Road accident kills two in Tangail

Two people including a NGO official were killed and four others injured while an oil-laden lorry hit a passenger-laden human- hauler (locally known as Mahindra) at Ghatail upazila here last night. "The accident took place in Porabari area under Deulabari union of the upazila around 9:30 pm", said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gatail Police Station Abu Salam Mia. Of the deceased, police confirmed the identity of Shafiqul Islam, 45, who worked as a manager of a non-government organisation (NGO) ASA, hailed from Dhanbari upazila. The accident occurred when the lorry, heading towards Alenga under Kalihati upazila, hit another passenger-carrying human-hauler coming from the opposite direction in the area, leaving one dead on the spot, said the Police official. Another wounded succumbed to his injuries on way to the Ghatail Upazila Health Complex as locals tried to shift the injured there immediately after the incident, he said. Drug peddler held with heroin in Chapainawabganj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in an anti-crime drive arrested an alleged top-listed drug peddler with 5.1 kilograms of heroin in Chapainawabganj district last midnight. The arrested was identified as Roksana Begum, 38, wife of Muhammad Alam of Char Kodalkati village under Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj district, the RAB sources said this afternoon. Acting on a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid on her residence around 9:30 pm and nabbed her. The team recovered the contraband drugs after searching the house red-handed, said Commanding Officer of RAB-5 Lieutenant Colonel Munim Ferdous. A case was recorded with Chapainawabganj Sadar Police Station in this connection and the arrested person along with the seized goods was handed over to the police. Fire guts four shops in Lakshmipur

Four shops were gutted in a fire at Pourashava hawkers market in the district town today. The fire originated from an electric short circuit at a shop of the hawkers market around 10am this morning and soon engulfed the adjacent business establishments, and as a result, four shops were completely gutted, Ranjit Kumar Saha, Deputy Director of Fire Services and Civil Defense Station said. Being informed, three units of firefighters rushed to the spot and doused the blaze with the help of locals and affected businessmen after one hour of efforts, he said. Kings earn fourth successive win in BPL

Holders Bashundhara Kings registered their fourth consecutive victories in the Bangladesh Premier League football beating Lieutenant Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by 3-0 goals held at Sheikh Fazlul Haque Mani Stadium in Gopalganj on Friday. BNP’s polls boycott is conspiracy against country’s sovereignty: Quader

Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said BNP's non-participation in the 12th general elections is part of its conspiracy against the country's sovereignty. He made the remark while speaking at a press conference at the AL President's Dhanmondi political office here this afternoon. Quader said the election would have been more competitive if the BNP participated in it. "Yet, the election was not voter-less and non-competitive though BNP did not participate in it. The party's election boycott is part of a conspiracy against the country's sovereignty," he added. He said in many countries of the world, despite the participation of all political parties, the voter turnout is not seen above 40 percent. "We know that about 25-30 percent of voter turnout is seen in many countries, including in Europe. Sometimes it gets less than that," the AL general secretary said. He said a crisis is prevailing all over the world while in the past few days snowstorm s have killed 30 people in the United States in a cold wave. Many counties have been affected by the snowstorm and the Russia-Ukraine war, Quader said. He said the first session of the 12th Jatiya Sangsad will begin on January 30. "We can claim that there is democratic continuity in the country because of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's bravery. Even after the elections, terrorists identified under the leadership of BNP are hatching plots," the minister added. Shoriful, Naim powers Dhaka victory in BPL opener

Pace bowler Shoriful Islam picked up a hat-trick and Naim Sheikh struck a half-century as Durdanto Dhaka made a winning start to the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), beating defending champions Cumilla Victorians by five wickets at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium today. Shoriful, who took all three wickets in the last three balls of the innings, finished with 3-27 to help the side restrict Cumilla to 143-6, despite a 66 from Imrul Kayes, who was removed as captain of the side despite leading them three BPL titles. Naim's 52 was instrumental in helping the side overhaul the target with three balls to spare. Naim and his opening partner Danushka Gunathilaka added 101-run to make the chase a cake-walk as Dhaka reached 147-5 in 19.3 overs to give its new owner a winning start. Naim who brought up his fifty off 38 balls, finally was dismissed by left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam after hitting three fours and as many sixes in 40 balls. Sri Lankan recruit Gunathilka's 41 came off 42 balls with the help of fo ur fours and one six.
