240-member contingent to represent Bangladesh in 19th Asian Games

A 240-member contingent will represent Bangladesh

in the 17 disciplines in the 19th Asian games scheduled to be held in

Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8.

Bangladesh contingent included 104 of men's athletes, 76 of women's athletes,

55 men's trainers and officials and five women's trainers and officials.

The disciplines are archery ( men's and women's), athletics (men's and

women's), boxing ( men's and women's), cricket( men's and women's), football

( man's and women's), bridge (men's), Gold ( men's and women's), hockey

(men's), kabaddi ( men's and women's), shooting( men's and women's),

swimming( men's and women's), weightlifting (men's), gymnastics (men's)

karate (men's and women's), chess, fencing and taekwondo.

Sabina Khatun will carry the Bangladesh flag during the opening ceremony

march-past of the Games.

The Bangladesh's mission in the Asian Games will begin with football event on

September 19, four days before the formal opening ceremony while the cricket

event will commence from September 22. The men's football team and women's

cricket team will leave for China on September 16 and 18 respectively. The

athletes of other disciplines will leave for China in phases.

BOA's Treasurer and Bangladesh Basketball Federation General Secretary AK

Sarkar and BOA Member Brigadier General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddique, also

the chairman of sports regulatory board of Bangladesh Army, will lead the

Bangladesh contingent in the games as Chef-de-Mission and deputy Chef-de-

Mission respectively.

Nearly 12,000 athletes from 45 countries of Asia will gather to participate

in the mega event. The athletes will compete in 481 events of 61 disciplines

in the Games.

Bangladesh Olympic Association's (BOA) Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza

expressed his high optimism for the positive result in the Games.

"We're going to participate in the Asian Games with the best possible teams

ever than before. Archery and shooting disciplines have been under the

training round the year and the athletes of the two disciplines took part

different international events... We also hope good result from cricket....

So, we can expect positive result from these disciplines," said the BOA

Secretary at a press conference held today (Sunday) at BOA auditorium.

Shahed said there is also scope for getting good result in boxing and

athletics events because two expatriate athletes -- female boxer Zeenat

Ferdous and England-based Bangladeshi sprinter Imranur Rahman -- will

represent the country in the largest sporting event in Asian.

"We're expecting good results compared to the previous occasion in the Asian

Games...We are quite positive for the results and hope the athletes would

bring good result for the country from the Asian Games, he added.

PM leaves New Delhi for home

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today emplaned for home from here after attending the G20 Summit held on September 9-10.

A flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, carrying the premier and her entourage members, departed from the Palam Airport in New Delhi at 01:08 pm (IST).

State Minister for Commerce and Industry of India Anupriya Singh Patel saw the prime minister off at the airport.

The flight is scheduled to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka at 03:30pm (local time).

Earlier, on September 8, the premier arrived here and attended the G20 Summit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

During the visit, she had a bilateral meeting with her Indian counterpart at his official residence in the afternoon of September 8.

Before the bilateral meeting, three MoUs were signed between the two neighbouring countries.

Three MoUs are: "cooperation in the agriculture research ", "cultural exchange" and "simplification of financial transactions between the common people of the two countries".

At the G20 summit, on September 9, the Bangladesh premier attended different sessions and delivered two speeches under the main theme of the summit "One Earth, One Family, One Future".

During "One Earth" and "One Family" sessions, Sheikh Hasina pointed out how to address the challenges like climate change, economic recovery after Covid pandemic, war in Europe resulting in the severe disruption of global supply of the essential commodities such as fuel, food and fertiliser.

The prime minister also presented the experience of Bangladesh's incredible success in various socio-economic fields during the tenure of the current government before the participating world leaders.

On September 10, the second and last day of the G20 summit, the Bangladesh prime minister along with the other world leaders paid homage at the Memorial of Mahatma Gandhi at Raj Ghat.

She also joined the concluding session of the conference where the "G20 New Delhi Leaders Declaration" was adopted.

During her tour, the premier, as well, had bilateral meetings with Saudi Arabian Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, Argentine President Alberto Angel Fernandez, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

India's G20 presidency began in December 2022 and during this presidency term, it invited a total of nine countries including Bangladesh to attend all the G20 summit.

The invited countries are- Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and United Arab Emirates.

Biden’s cordial chats with PM draw US-Bangladesh good relations: Momen

Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said United States (US) President Joe Biden's very warm and cordial chats with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina marked a deep-rooted good relation between Dhaka and Washington.

"He (Biden) has all the intensions to build good relations with Bangladesh," the foreign minister said in a media briefing last night on the Bangladesh premier's daily engagements in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned Dhaka this afternoon after attending the G-20 Summit in New Delhi in India at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

During the media briefing, Momen said Biden earlier remarked that "America has a very beautiful relation with Bangladesh in the last 50 years and it will be further strengthened and solid in the next 50 years".

"Today, we have seen the sample of it," he added.

Replying to a query, Momen said: "It (talks among Biden, Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana and Saima Wazed in two separate occasions including in dinner in a very cordial environment) is the evidence that we have a deep and solid relation with Washington and we will further strengthen it in future."

He said the USA is very keen to further consolidate the relationship with Bangladesh and for which they are sending their people and holding talks.

"They (American government) are not putting any pressure on us rather the media exaggerates," he said.

In a reply to another question, the foreign minister said Joe Biden, Sheikh Hasina and PM's daughter Saima Wazed had talks for 15 minutes at Bharat Mandapam International Exhibition Centre at Pragati Maidan in the Indian capital on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit.

"When our Prime Minister was talking to President Biden, he was very happy and fully enthusiastic and the discussion took place in very cordial and warm environment," he said.

As the Bangladesh premier and her daughter were talking to Biden, PM's Ambassador-at-Large Mohammad Ziauddin took out his cell phone to take a picture of that moment, he added.

"President Biden took a selfie with his cell phone as well," Momen also said.

During the talks with Biden, Momen said the Bangladesh premier apprised the US president of her initiatives to give the Bangladesh people a beautiful and dignified life.

"Bangladesh is my family as I have lost my father, mother and brothers who were brutally killed on August 15 in 1975. I am doing everything possible for Bangladesh people's welfare," Momen quoted premier as saying.

Sheikh Hasina said she has taken an initiative to give every homeless and landless people a house free of cost as part of her government’s move that none will remain homeless in Bangladesh.

The US president said he knew about her efforts taken for Bangladesh's overall development and praised Sheikh Hasina's leadership.

According to Momen, during the talks, the premier invited Biden to visit Bangladesh at his convenient time.

The US president then accepted the premier's invitation and expressed his desire to visit Bangladesh.

The foreign minister also enunciated the chats between PM's daughter autism expert Saima Wazed and American President Joe Biden, saying, Saima Wazed told him that she has been working with autism and had worked in Florida.

The US president has shown interest with Saima Wazed's works and wanted to know about her works, Momen said, adding, "Saima then gave her business card to Biden".

Biden also invited Saima Wazed to visit the USA.

The foreign minister said the US president had also cordial chats with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana in presence of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

At that time, Sheikh Hasina praised Biden for his speech at the G20 Summit, Momen said.

Replying to another question, he said the prime minister had also cordial talks with other global leaders that included Japanese and Italian prime ministers, German chancellor and Egypt president.

"The people of Bangladesh should be proud of Sheikh Hasina," Momen continued.

Asked for comments about adverse comments by some groups regarding the exclusive photographs and chats of Biden with Sheikh Hasina and her daughter Momen said it was very regretting.

"It will be very sorrowful if someone raises questions in this regard," he said.

The foreign minister said a section of people earlier also had questioned about the respect showed to the Bangladesh premier by her British counterpart.

Asked if there was any political talks between Sheikh Hasina and Modi Momen said "when we were there, there were no political talks".

But, he said, the two premiers informed each other that the elections would be held both in India and Bangladesh next year.

BNP leader Aman sent to jail upon surrender

A Dhaka court today ordered to send BNP leader

Amanullah Aman to jail, in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption

Commission (ACC) in 2007.

Earlier, Aman surrendered before the court of Judge Abul Kashem of the

Special Judge's Court-1 this morning, as per the orders of the High Court.

The court however, scrapped his plea and ordered to send her to jail, defence

lawyer Nazrul Islam told BSS.

On August 7, 2023, the High Court released the full text of the 281-page

judgment stating that the couple has to surrender before the lower court

concerned within 15 days and uploaded it on its website.

Prior to that, a High Court division bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam

Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat pronounced the judgment on May 30,

upholding BNP leader Aman Ullah Aman and his wife Sabera Aman's jail sentence

of 13-year and three-year terms respectively, in a case for amassing illegal

wealth beyond known income source.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on March 6, 2007, filed the case with

Kafrul Police Station in the capital against the duo.

The Special Judge Court on June 21, 2007, handed down the verdict. The couple

filed an appeal against the judgment and the High Court on August 16, 2010,

had acquitted them, allowing their appeal.

The ACC however, challenged the acquittal order. The Appellate Division on

May 26, 2014, scrapped the High Court verdict and ordered a fresh hearing on

appeal in the case.

PM returns home from New Delhi

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today returned home from New Delhi after attending the G20 Summit in India.

A Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight carrying the premier and her entourage members landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at 03:38pm.

Earlier, the flight departed from the Palam Airport in New Delhi at 1.08pm (IST).

BP Koirala is my political inspiration: NC President Deuba

Kathmandu, Sept 10: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba today said first elected Prime Minister and people's leader BP Koirala was his political inspiration.

At an inaugural ceremony of the three-day 'BP Literature Festival' organised here by the NC, he regarded Koirala, also founder member of the NC, as a multi-dimensional personality. "He (Koirala) was an inspiring and exemplary thinker in the political sphere. He is also regarded as an immortal figure in literature even today. We have pursued the path shown by his political thoughts."

Saying efforts are on to prosper the country based on his thoughts, the former Prime Minister said all political parties have not only been attracted to his thoughts but they are also following them.

He expressed the hope that the Festival would distribute knowledge on an array of activities including political thoughts propounded by BP, his literary works, his struggle and social, economic, religious and cultural aspects, to the young generation.

"BP was a high ranking leader and a famous litterateur who believed in simplicity. When we met him, he would ask us to become a good person. He deeply read Marx and Gandhi. He would consider Gandhi's thought relevant when it comes to love, peace, non-violence and democracy. He would relate to Marx when it comes to economic equality."

Now, the NC has adhered to the multiparty governance system and the democratic socialist economic system as its principle and ideology, he said.

"BP was not only a national level leader but was famous at the international level as well. He was a political thinker and a litterateur. We would speak up against all sorts of discriminations. He fought for inclusion, justice, equality and freedom for people, and he stood firm for nationality, democracy and socialism," he said.

The Nepali Congress (NC) has hoisted the Festival, 2080 BS commemorating the 110th birth anniversary of the NC founding leader BP Koirala.

The event kicked off today at 9:00 am at the NC central office, Sanepa of Lalitpur.

Organised in collaboration with various other organisations including the Nepal Writers' Association, a poetry symposium, gazhal recitations, musical performances, an art exhibition, documentary screenings and a photo exhibition are among the attractions of the festival, said Min Bahadur Bishwokarma, chief of the Information, Communications and Publicity Department of the NC. The opening session of the festival witnessed the screening of a documentary titled "Hijacking for Democracy."

PM Dahal consults with political leadership over his upcoming visit to China

Kathmandu, Sept 10: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' today held high-level political talks in the run up to his visit to the United States of America to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and subsequent visit to China.

In the discussions held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Minister in Singha Durbar, the Prime Minister was advised to prioritize the establishment of balanced diplomatic ties with the neighbours, to review the implementation status of agreements, to pay heed to security affairs of mutual concerns, and to promote the Nepal's non-aligned foreign policy. In addition to this, the Prime Minster was urged for well preparedness for securing benefits from the visit.

Parties representing in the Federal Parliament, top political leaders, former prime ministers and former foreign ministers were present in the meeting.

In the meeting, the Prime Minister was confident that his upcoming China visit would remain productive and the government was making necessary preparations for making the trip successful. He said he hoped to get right suggestions for making the visit effective.

He made it clear that the government was committed to maintaining balanced relations with Nepal's two close neighbors and the entire world, the Prime Minister reiterated the government's commitment to the policy of non-alignment. According to the Prime Minister, Nepal has set to highlight its development efforts, the impact of climate change it has been facing, Nepal's efforts to conclude the peace process and other contemporary issues, appealing to the world for combined efforts towards that end.

He apprised the meeting that he decided to visit China straightly from the US after attending the UN mega event after adequate consultations at the diplomatic level. "The China visit will focus on further strengthening Nepal-China relations and issues of bilateral interests."

Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN (UML) Chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chair and former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal were among those senior leaders present in the consultation by Prime Minister about his visit.

Action will be taken against guilty in child’s death: Health Minister

Kathmandu, Sept 10: Minister for Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet has made it clear that action would be taken against the guilty if anyone is found knowingly committing a mistake in the death of a girl child at Kanti Children's Hospital.

Rejisha Gopali, a five-year-old girl, had allegedly died due to lack of treatment at the hospital's emergency ward last week. She was suffering from persistent vomiting and fever when she was brought to the emergency ward for treatment. Instead of sending her to the doctor, the hospital staff told her mother and grandfather to get a ticket and wait for their turn, it is said.

Minister Basnet said this while talking to the journalists at Tribhuvan International Airport today, upon arrival home from Cairo, the capital of Egypt, after attending the International Conference on Population, Health and Development there.

He asserted that the guilty in the death of the girl due to lack of timely treatment would face action. "Although I was out of the country at the time of the incident, I have watched this incident closely. I had telephoned the Secretary from Egypt itself directing for constituting an investigation committee. Action will be taken if any mistake is found to have been committed knowingly," the Health Minister said.

He said extensive discussions were held in the conference in Cairo, Egypt on the adverse impact the population migration and unsystematic settlements are having on the public health and on the ways of resolving these problems. According to him, a holistic development could be achieved together with the development in the health and population sector by resolving the problems in this sector.

Health and Population Minister Basnet shared on the occasion that his Egyptian counterpart in the conference expressed the commitment to organise this programme next year as well considering its significance. He added that he met with the health ministers of various countries, the representatives of the donor agencies and political leaders attending the conference and held discussions with them on strategic topics.

Minister Basnet said that during the conference he, in his capacity as the government representative and as the health minister, also lobbied with the health ministers of related countries in favour of public health expert of Nepal Dr Shambhu Acharya who has registered his candidacy to the post of Regional Director of WHO for South East Asia Region. The WHO South East Asia Region conference is being held next month.

Minister Basnet had left for Cairo of Egypt on September 4 to participate in the International Conference on Population and Development held there on September 5-8.

Mission hospital in Parbat remains shut since two decades

Parbat, Sept 10: The Mission Hospital here has remained closed since around two decades. Established in 2050 BS at Paiyu Rural Municipality-4 in the district with the aim of providing health service to the people of rural areas in the district in particular, the health facility was closed citing insecurity during the Maoist insurgency, it has been said.

However, no efforts have been taken on the part of concerned authorities to resume the hospital despite repeated calls from the local people in this regard, said local people.

The hospital building was constructed on 15 ropanis of land with investments of Rs 15 million provided by an international non-governmental organisation. The hospital provided all sorts of health services including specialist healthcare and surgery, benefiting people from Parbat, Syangja and Gulmi districts. It then had two doctors from the United States and four Nepali doctors. Without operation for a long time, four buildings for the hospital and furniture have been dilapidated.

The roofs are leaking after the tiles have broken and dislodged. The hospital buildings will be completely damaged without repair on time, said Ganga Neupane, former registrar of the hospital. "The US Government called back its all doctors working for the hospital during the conflict. The health facility remained closed after they left," he said.

The closure of the hospital has affected local people as the government has been ignorant in it operation, said a local social worker Lal Bahadur Pradhan. "After the hospital closed, local patients are forced to visit places like Pokhara, Syangja, Butwal, Palpa and Bhairahawa," he said.

The health facility would receive from 50 to 100 patients on a daily basis.

Another local Anita Sharma accused the local level of being apathetic in operating the hospital. "We have urged all concerned to operate the health facility. But none should concerns to this effect," said Mitra Lal Bashyal, member of the Province Assembly of Gandaki Province.

Bangladesh-French relations to be elevated to strategic engagements: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said bilateral relations between Bangladesh and France will reach a strategic partnership for shared prosperity of all.

"I am confident that our bilateral relations can move to strategic engagements for the shared prosperity for all in the Indo-Pacific and beyond," she told a banquet hosted in honour of French President Emmanuel Macron at the Hotel InterContinental here.

On his arrival at banquet venue, Macron was received by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina with a bouquet of flower.

The younger daughter of the Father of the Nation and sister of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Rehana, was present at the banquet.

The Prime Minister said they are opening up new areas of cooperation in strategic assets and advanced technologies.

"Our partnership can be a meaningful force to address the multiple crises of wars, climate change and cost-of-living that our world is facing," she said.

The Premier said France has been trusted development partner of Bangladesh since its independence. "We have developed a robust trade partnership with focus on responsible business conduct," she continued.

Macron arrived in Dhaka tonight at the invitation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on a bilateral tour to Bangladesh after attending the G-20 Summit in New Delhi, India.

Sheikh Hasina said it is her great pleasure and honour to host the French President at this banquet.

"I recall your warm hospitality at the Elysee Palace in November 2021. I am delighted that you have accepted my invitation to visit Dhaka," she said.

The people of Bangladesh join in the banquet with her in welcoming "you (French President) and your delegation here."

She reminded: "France holds a special place in our hearts and imagination".

On a lighter note, the Premier said they have arranged for the French President to have a taste of Bangladesh's unique kacchi biriyani.

"Both our nations are extremely proud of our cuisine, culture and linguistic heritage. It is time to promote further interface and fusion between our two cultures to bring our two peoples closer to each other," she said.

She continued: "May I propose a toast to your health with another delicacy of ours - juice made of Amra - a popular local fruit."

She said her father, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was greatly inspired by the spirit of the French Revolution.

The Premier said Bangabandhu dedicated his life to promote the values of liberty, equality and fraternity in his fight for self-determination.

This was also reflected in his (Bangabandhu's Historic Speech of 7th March 1971, she said and quoted Bangabandhu as saying,

"Our struggle this time is for our liberation. Our struggle this time is for independence."

"Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib's call for freedom echoed with global intellectuals like Andre Marlaux who mobilized a number of young people to fight for our cause," she opined.

"It often strikes me that President Macron with his Forward March movement carries the proud legacy of Marlaux and his followers," she said.

She continued: "We admire you, Mr. President, for the many bold reforms you have undertaken in France. We find you to be a breath of fresh air in international politics".

"Your (French President) push for strategic autonomy largely aligns with our own foreign policy dictum 'Friendship to all, malice towards none'- given to us by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman," she added.

Smoked Hilsha with piazo and somosa and mulligatawny soup with artisanal and bread and butter have been served in the dinner.

The main items served to Macron were mutton kacchi biryani, beef seekh kebab, chicken korma, sour aubergine, traditional luchi bread and roasted lobster.

The deserted items were pathishapta pitha, sweet yoghurt, rosogolla and fresh fruit cuts and the beverage were arma juice, selection of fresh juices, selection of water and soft drinks, selection of tea and coffee.

Child killed in Chapainawabganj road accident

A girl child was killed in a road accident in Moharajpur Ghorastand area of sadar upazila in the district yesterday.

The deceased was Safia, 4, daughter of Md Shahin Islam of Bagbaritola under Moharajpur union in Chapainawabganj sadar upazila.

Officer in charge (OC) of Chapainawabganj Sadar Model Police Station Md Sajjad Hossain said, as Safia was crossing the road at around 12 noon, a battery run auto-rickshaw hit her.

She was rushed to District Sadar Hospital in critical condition where the doctor on duty declared her dead, he added.

"Light to moderate rain or thundershowers along with temporary gusty wind is

likely to occur at a few places over Rangpur, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions

and at one or two places over Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna and

Barishal divisions with moderately heavy falls at places over the country,"

it said.

However, the met office predicted that the rainfall activity may increase in

the next 72 hours.

Day temperature may rise slightly and night temperature may remain nearly

unchanged.

Country's maximum temperature on Saturday was recorded 37.0 degrees Celsius

at Kumarkhali, while today's minimum temperature was 23.3 degrees Celsius at

Bandarban.

The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours till 6am today was recorded 22 mm

at Khepupara.

The sun sets at 6:08pm today and rises at 5: 43am tomorrow in the capital.
