Malan century guides England home as Tigers bemoan batting woes

Dawid Malan took centre stage as England clinched a three-wicket win over Bangladesh in the first ODI of their three-match series.

The southpaw showcased his impeccable form, scoring his fourth ODI century. Also, this was Malan's second consecutive ton in the ODIs.

After the match, Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal said his team should have put at least 30-35 more runs on the board to make things tougher for the tourists. He also bemoaned losing quick wickets in the middle overs.

Chasing 210, England lost their openers to Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam. And at the 38.5-over mark, they had lost seven wickets and still needed 49 runs to win.

All eyes were on Malan, who was the only recognised batter left for the tourists. But with Adil Rashid's composed batting, they put on an unbeaten partnership of 51 and sealed the match for the visitors.

Bangladesh's Taijul Isalm, who played his first ODI at home in three years, managed to bag three wickets but conceded 5.4 runs per over. Also, Mehidy Hasan Miraz scalped two wickets.

Earlier, Bangladesh got off to a shaky start as the opening partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das produced just 33 runs before Litton was dismissed for 7. After that, Tamim was also dismissed quickly.

Mark Wood and Chris Woakes proved to be a formidable force against the Bangladesh openers.

Later, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan were also dismissed quickly, with Mushfiq only managing to score 17 runs off 33 balls.

Najmul Hossain Shanto (58) provided some stability for Bangladesh, scoring his first ODI half-century in the 31st over.

All-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad was the second-highest scorer for Bangladesh, with 31 runs off 48 balls. However, he never looked comfortable at the crease.

Wood was the standout performer for England, taking two wickets for 35 runs in eight overs; Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, and Adil Rashid also claimed two wickets each.

The tourists will have the chance to seal the series on Friday when they take the field in the second match at the same venue. The third and final ODI of the series will be played in Chattogram on March 6.

Those expelled from the party are IU BCL unit vice-president Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora, its activists Tabassum Islam, Israt Jahan Mim, Halima Khatun Urmi and Moyabia Jahan.

A press release, signed by BCL president Saddam Hussain and its general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan, was issued in this regard this afternoon.

They took the decision two days after the probe body formed by the Islamic University unit BCL sent its investigation report to them through email.

Saddam Hussain told UNB that they expelled the five from the party for violating the party's rules and regulations.

On February 12 night, Fulpori Khatun, a first-year student of the Finance and Banking department, was tortured and intimidated by Ontora and her associates at Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall on the university campus in Kushtia.

Bangladesh fight back as Shakib, Taijul scalp wickets

Shakib Al Hasan struck early in England's innings in response to Bangladesh's total of 209 in the first match of the three-match ODI series today in Mirpur. Taijul Islam also joined in the attack, claiming a wicket within the first ten overs to put up a fight against the visiting team.

After Bangladesh's below-par total, with Najmul Hossain Shanto being the only one to score a fifty for the hosts, England began their chase with Jason Roy attempting a big hit off Shakib, resulting in a leading edge that was easily caught by Tamim Iqbal.

Philip Salt also fell victim to Taijul's quick delivery, failing to get his bat in the right position and getting struck on the pad before losing his stumps. England were two down for 35 in 8.1 overs.

Earlier, Bangladesh got off to a shaky start as their opening partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Litton Das produced just 33 runs before Litton was dismissed for 7. Tamim was unable to maintain a steady pace and also fell shortly after.

The pace bowling duo of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes proved to be formidable for the Bangladesh openers.

Later, the responsibility of steering Bangladesh to a competitive total fell on Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan. However, both players were dismissed in quick succession, with Mushfiqur only managing to score 17 runs from 33 balls.

Mushfiqur's dismissal came as he attempted a slog sweep off a well-tossed-up delivery from Adil Rashid, only to be caught out easily by Mark Wood at deep mid-region.

Shakib Al Hasan was also dismissed in a similar fashion, but he failed to make contact with the ball during his attempted slog sweep, resulting in his stumps being dismantled by Moeen Ali.

Najmul Hossain Shanto provided some stability for Bangladesh, scoring his first ODI half-century in the 31st over.

However, he was unable to convert it into a century and fell short at 58 runs. All-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad was the second-highest scorer for Bangladesh with 31 runs off 48 balls, although he never looked comfortable at the crease.

Mark Wood was the standout performer for England, taking two wickets for 35 runs in eight overs, while Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, and Adil Rashid also claimed two wickets each.

Mushfiqur, Shakib fell in quick succession as Bangladesh struggle

After winning the toss and electing to bat first in the first ODI of the three-match series against England in Mirpur on Wednesday, Bangladesh lost four wickets for 106 runs in just 22.4 overs.

The last two wickets- Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan- fell in a span of three overs and 11 runs. Both of them fell prey to spinners— Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali.

Mushfqiur had a poor run in the middle once again. Before skying a catch to Mark Wood, he played 33 balls to score only 17 runs.

It was a well-tossed-up delivery from Adil, Mushfqiur went for a slog sweep, but it was a half-hearted attempt. He was taken easily at the deep mid-region by Mark Wood. Mushfiuqr has only a fifty in his 10 ODI innings.

Moeen dismissed Shakib in a similar manner to how Adil dismissed Mushfiqur, except for one crucial difference: Shakib was unable to make contact with the ball during his attempted slog sweep, resulting in the ball smashing into his stumps and sending one of them flying.

Tamim Iqbal made a steady start but was unable to maintain his momentum, while Litton Das struggled and had a brief stint on the pitch. Tamim managed to score 23 runs, while Litton fell for just 7. The pace bowling duo of Mark Wood and Chris Woakes proved to be a challenging obstacle for the Bangladesh openers.

Lionel Messi Won The Best FIFA Men’s Player Prize For 2022, Records

Lionel Messi, often considered one of the greatest football players of all time, has once again been crowned The Best FIFA Men's Player award. This prestigious award, which recognizes the world's top footballer, was presented to Messi at a glitzy ceremony held in Paris. This is the second time that Messi has won the award after it got separated from the Ballon d’Or in 2016. The Argentine forward had an outstanding year, leading Argentina to the World Cup trophy, where he was also named the tournament's best player.

A Brief History of The Best FIFA Men's Player Award

The Best FIFA Men’s Player Award is an annual award presented by the world governing body of football, FIFA. It was established in 2016 as part of a revamp of the FIFA World Player of the Year prize, which was presented between 1991 to 2015.

Initially, the FIFA awards were given to the world's best men's football players, while similar awards for both males and females were presented between 2001 and 2009. In 2010, the men's award was merged into the FIFA Ballon d'Or, while the women's award remained until 2015. After 2015, both men's and women's awards were integrated into The Best FIFA Football Awards.

The award is presented to the player deemed to have performed the best in the previous calendar year, as determined by a voting process involving captains and head coaches of international teams, as well as journalists and fans. 25% of the total vote is held by each group.

The inaugural winner of The Best FIFA Men's Player Award was Cristiano Ronaldo, who was then playing for Real Madrid. Ronaldo went on to win the award again in 2017, making him the only player to win it twice in the first three years of its existence.

In 2018, Luka Modric broke Ronaldo's streak by winning The Best FIFA Men's Player Award for the first time. After that, Messi won it in 2019. In 2020, Robert Lewandowski was awarded the title after an exceptional year with Bayern Munich.

Overview of Lionel Messi's Career in 2022

Messi passed a magical year in 2022. He appeared in 51 games for clubs and the national team. He scored 35 goals in total and had 35 assists. Among these 35 goals, he scored 17 goals for his club Paris Saint-Germain and 18 goals for Argentina. However, above all, his outstanding performance in the World Cup exceeds all his previous achievements.

At the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Argentina's Lionel Messi had a tournament to remember. In the opening match against Saudi Arabia, Messi scored from the penalty spot in a 2–1 defeat. In the next match against Mexico, Messi scored a low 20-yard strike and recorded an assist on Enzo Fernández's goal in Argentina's 2–0 win.

In the last 16 games versus Australia, Messi scored the opening goal of the game on his 1,000th senior career appearance, becoming the most-capped South American (CONMEBOL member) footballer of all time. He also surpassed and equaled several FIFA World Cup and national team records.

Lionel Messi Won the Best FIFA Men's Player Prize For 2022

In 2022, Lionel Messi was awarded the Best FIFA Men's Player prize, making him the third individual to receive the honor twice, following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo (2016, 2017) and Robert Lewandowski (2020, 2021). The last time Messi won The Best award was in 2019.

Lionel Messi made history at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, becoming the sixth player to score in every knockout round of the world cup. His impressive performance included 7 goals and 3 assists, with his most impressive contribution coming during the final at Lusail, where he scored a brace. It was a remarkable achievement for Messi, who had never accomplished such a feat in his international career prior to Qatar.

Kylian Mbappé was another contender for this award. Mbappé had 44 points, while Messi won The Best with 52 points. Voting for the FIFA The Best men's awards took into account performances from August 2021 to December 2022, with a particular emphasis on the FIFA men's World Cup, which ended in December of the same year.

The award ceremony was designed to recognize the efforts of all participants throughout the world cup as well as the club, ensuring that everyone's accomplishments were acknowledged.

PM cautions insurance companies against “intentional damage” claims

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today advised insurance companies to be cautious against “intentional damage” claims and defy any such inappropriate demands even in the face of political pressures by influential people.

“Please don’t bow down to pressure from anyone,” she said while opening the National Insurance Day-2023 at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital.

The premier said influential people like cabinet ministers and she herself might lobby for payment of undue insurance claims in cases like fire incidents.

“I myself or our cabinet colleagues may lobby. (But) you must know first the real damage (caused by the fire). They can demand a huge amount. But pay the money after conducting a proper investigation,” she said.

The premier said she feared unscrupulous insurance claim investigators often might get a share of the amount paid by insurance companies against intentional property damage.

Sheikh Hasina described her as a member of the insurance family recalling her father and Bangladesh founder Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s association with the then Alpha Insurance Company.

“I don’t want the insurance companies to earn a bad reputation as I am a member of the family,” she said.

Finance Ministry and the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) jointly organised the programme. The Day is being observed with the theme 'My life, My Wealth, If Insured, It Will Be Safe (Amar Jibon, Amar Sampad, Bima Koriley, Thakbe Nirapod)'.

The prime minister said the people involved in the insurance business will have to remain a little bit cautious about the matter.

Referring to frequent fire incidents in some readymade garments factories, she said investigations revealed that some such fire incidents were intentional to demand huge money from the insurance companies as compensation.

Without mentioning the name of any factory she said that the owner of a factory gave Tk 20,000 to a female worker to set it on fire and the worker confessed it after being arrested.

The prime minister said she have recently learnt that Sadharan Bima Corporation gave Tk 40 crore as compensation for damage of a flat in a fire despite the fire basically broke out at an adjacent flat.

“I have learnt about such an incident. I will make the matter to be investigated. How much assets were in his flat that Tk 40 crore have been paid as damages claim,” she said.

The premier said the flat which had caught the fire and was damaged badly didn't get any single penny as the flat has no insurance.

"Do you (insurance companies) have any answer in the matter," she said.

She asked insurance companies to make grassroots people aware about the good things of insurance as the people in the upzila level are now economically capable in doing so.

Secretary of the Financial Institutions Division, Ministry of Finance, Sheikh Mohammad Salim Ullah, Chairman of the IDRA Jynul Bari and Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) President Sheikh Kabir Hossain, also spoke on the occasion.

A video documentary on the insurance sector was screened at the ceremony.

On March 1, 1960, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman started working at the then-Alpha Insurance Company. Therefore, the government has decided to celebrate March 1 as the National Insurance Day, every year.

The government had upgraded the "National Insurance Day '' from 'B' category to 'A' category last year commemorating the great architect of independence, greatest Bangalee of all times and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sheikh Hasina said her government will ensure that the vehicles can’t ply the roads without proper insurance in reply to an allegation that the law enforcers don't take proper steps against third party insurance for cars.

"I know how the third party insurance of car hampers as I am its victim," she said.

The prime minister raised a question about functioning of third party insurance for cars, saying how the third party insurance for cars is still operational in the country as it had already been cancelled.

She said her government has taken various timely and effective measures to make the insurance industry more developed and modern since assuming power in 2009.

Briefly spelling out steps for the development of the insurance sector, she said they have enacted Insurance Act-2010, the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority Act-2010, Insurance Corporation Act-2019 and the National Insurance Policy-2014.

She said her government is implementing a Bangladesh Insurance Sector Development Project for modernisation of the insurance sector.

The prime minister stressed the need for complete digitisation of the insurance sector and asked all concerned to enhance the capacity of Unified Messaging Platform (UMP) to increase people's confidence in this sector.

She said they have appointed an insurance actuary to ensure the overall development of the insurance industry in the country accordingly.

"Insurance companies have increased in the country and we're implementing several mega projects. Insurance is necessary in every sector," she said.

The prime minister thanked the authorities concerned for introducing health, life and crop insurances.

"You people have to go for massive publicity about the good things of insurance as the people of our country largely ignored the system," she said.

The premier however asked all to remain cautious as the global economic recession arising out from the Covid-19 pandemic, Russia-Ukraine war, sanctions and counter sanction can not hamper Bangladesh in any way.

Briefly mentioning her government's efforts made in the last 14 years since assuming power in 2009, she said Bangladesh has now become a developing nation and acquired dignity on the global stage.

The prime minister said they have established democracy in the country through struggles.

Bangladesh is continuously progressing ahead due to continued democratic process in the country as the Awami League had been voted to power in 2008, 2014 and 2018 general elections, she said.

She handed over a crest, certificate and three books (The Unfinished Memoirs, the Prison Diaries and New China as I Saw written by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman) to the winners of the easy competitions at the school and college levels.

The premier also distributed honorary certificates to National Life Insurance and the Popular Life Insurance in the life insurance category while the Green Delta Life Insurance and Sonar Bangla Life Insurance got the award in the non-life insurance category.
