Let’s Talk on ‘Smart Agriculture and Innovation’ held at BAU

Young Bangla of Centre for Research and Information (CRI) recently hosted its policy forum Let's Talk on "Smart Agriculture and Innovation" at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) in Mymensingh.

This session of Let's Talk focused on different contemporary issues, especially the government initiatives to boost smart agriculture, the extension of smart agricultural technologies, smart technologies adoption, training for farmers, involvement of youth in agro-business and environment-friendly smart agro-technologies.

State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam; Waseqa Ayesha Khan MP, chair of the parliamentary standing committee on the power, energy, and mineral resources ministry; Professor Lutful Hassan, vice-chancellor of BAU; and Umma Kulsum Popi, Joy Bangla Youth Award winner and co-founder of BD Assistant and Premium Fruits, joined the event panelists on January 18.

The students and youths of Mymensingh had an interactive discussion and idea-sharing session at the programme.

State Minister for Planning Shamsul Alam said: "Our farmers are experts in their profession. As the country is moving forward to becoming ‘Smart Bangladesh’, we are creating agricultural personnel who would help the sector by inventing new technologies."

Addressing concerns about the performance of technologies, Shamsul said, "The difference in performances of technologies is natural as their piloting always performs better in a controlled environment (such as a lab) compared to a natural and uncontrolled environment (such as a field).''

Let's Talk on 'Smart Agriculture and Innovation' held at BAU

"We can do more research and provide intensive training to the Department of Agricultural Extension officers and the farmers to reduce the difference in performance. Also, research centers and practical labs should be established in villages. And most importantly, students should be involved in direct farming activities that will increase communication with farmers and understanding of their needs."

"Revolution is an ongoing process. We are moving forward from a Green Revolution to a Smart Revolution. Smart Agriculture is an integral part of the ongoing Smart Revolution. We can already see the modernisation and innovations in farming in many ways, and only you, the students, can take it forward," he said.

Waseqa said: "Since we have to move towards innovations, we are also thinking about making existing technology more environmentally friendly. For example, the government is planning to replace diesel-powered irrigation machines with solar-based machines. And already this project is in the pilot phase in 22 districts."

"This project can bring new changes in fuel efficiency and the government is also planning to provide incentives and easy loans to farmers, especially women."

Lutful discussed the importance of planning and research to boost the agricultural sector.

He called on the students to emphasise understanding farmers' and consumers' needs while planning any initiative or project.

Previously undiscovered gas found in Bhola North-2 field

More reserves of gas have been found in Bangladesh's Bhola North-2 gas field.

The Bangladesh Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources in a press release said that new gas was found from an appraisal well.

It mentioned that the drilling works started at the Bhola North -2 Gas Filed on December 5 last year and ended on January 17 this year after reaching 3,428 metre depth to the underground ground.

“Today (Monday, January 23, 2023) the discovery was made after completion of the Drill-Stem Testing (DST).”

Bill placed in JS to pave a way for govt to adjust gas, electricity without public hearing

The DST in exploration wells is the last step of oil and gas exploration.

“The actual amount of gas production will be determined after completion of the final production testing. But Bapex is hopeful that the field would produce 20 MMCF per day,” said the release.

gas field Bhola north2

State Minister for Power State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid thanked Bapex for the new gas find and said the gas exploration has to continue as per planning.

The state-owned Petrobangla has plans to drill a total of 46 exploration, development and work-over wells from 2022 to 2025.

Retail gas prices hiked for power plants, industries and commercial users with effect from Feb 1

Nasrul Hamid directed the officials of his ministry and subordinate bodies to further intensify the ongoing gas exploration and production activities, saying that the government has been working to ensure the energy security of the country.

He said efforts have been continuing to sign short and long term contracts with oil and gas producing countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Brunei alongside activities to increase the local gas exploration.

The ministry also in a Facebook post announced the new find saying that the field would produce 20 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMCFD).

“This state-owned Bangladesh Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) brought good news at this moment of global energy crisis,” it said congratulating all its staffs involved in the drilling works.

Earlier on November 3 last year the ministry made a similar announcement about the discovery of new gas in the Bhola gas field.

At that time, State Minister for Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid announced a new structure of 239 billion cubic feet (BCF) of natural gas from the exploration well No-Togbi-1 under the Bhola gas field.

“But this will take one-and-a-half to two years to start producing gas from the well and supply it to the national gas network”, he had told reporters while sharing the “good news” at a press briefing at his ministry conference room at that time.

12 people injured in shooting at Louisiana nightclub

A dozen people were injured in a Baton Rouge nightclub shooting, authorities in Louisiana said Sunday.

One of the victims is in critical condition, police said. No arrests have been made, but police believe the early morning attack was “targeted."

"This was not a random act of violence, based on the preliminary investigating efforts," Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul said at a news conference Sunday afternoon. “We believe that this was a targeted event, where someone was specifically targeted and others were injured in that process."

Three Baton Rouge police officers were nearby when the shots were fired around 1:30 a.m. and responded to the Dior Bar and Lounge. They administered life-saving aid until emergency medical technicians arrived.

“We believe their immediate response prevented further injuries,” Paul said.

Although police have some leads, Paul urged anyone else with information about shooting to come forward.

“There is someone who knows something — do the right thing. You can save the next incident because it is obvious that this person has total disregard for life,” Paul said.

Police did not say how many of the people shot were targeted. Paul declined to comment on how many shooters opened fire.

“I do understand the interest and everybody wanting information, but remember ... we have to get this right,” Paul said about the ongoing investigation. “And sometimes, getting it right means I can't give information right now.”

Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome — who met with mayors of other major U.S. cities in Washington, D.C., last week, to discuss the issue of crime — called the shooting “a senseless act of violence that will not go unchecked.”

“We will not stop our work until everyone feels safe and individuals no longer turn to guns to resolve their differences,” Broome tweeted.

Although the number of homicides in Baton Rouge decreased last year from 2021, Louisiana’s capital city has been plagued by gun violence. In October, an early-morning shooting near Southern University’s campus in Baton Rouge left nine people injured.
