Photographing the birth of a nation and its architect

Renowned French photographer Anne de Henning, who documented Bangladesh during its birth and infancy, said she found Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman to be “very charismatic”.

Talking about her photo of Bangabandhu’s speech at the first council of Awami League in independent Bangladesh, she said it was a strong testimony to the victory of freedom over oppression.

An exhibition titled ‘Witnessing History in the Making: Photographs by Anne de Henning’ is being held at Guimet Museum of Asian Art in Paris. The exhibition has been produced by Samdani Art Foundation and Centre for Research and Information (CRI).

Radwan Mujib Siddiq, grandson of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and trustee of CRI made a visit to the exhibition.

He said, “There was a leader from the subcontinent who led his country to independence based on very progressive ideals. He wanted a country that was secular and equal for all. And the whole of Bangladesh got behind him, fought a war against all odds and Bangladesh emerged independent.”

Radwan said Bangabandhu had a connection with the people and he could represent them the way that politicians are supposed to.

Henning said she was shocked to learn that three years after she photographed Bangabandhu, he was assassinated with most of his family members.

The exhibition is being held from October 19, 2022 to January 23, 2023 in partnership with Asia Now Paris Art Fair and Guimet Museum of Asian Art, according to a press release.

“The whole art world is in Paris right now and we’re so honoured that this exhibition has been invited by the Guimet Museum,” said Nadia Samdani MBE, President and Co-founder of Samdani Art Foundation

Reminiscing the days of Bangladesh’s Liberation War, Anne De Henning said, “You just had to walk through the streets and you would see the people gearing up, poorly equipped, but they expressed such a will and determination of achieving freedom for their country that it was extremely moving.”

Henning said the images at the exhibition should inspire the feeling that courage and determination can get you a long way.

The first iteration of the exhibition was held in Dhaka from December 10, 2021 to March 31, 2022 to celebrate 50 years of Bangladesh’s independence.

Henning’s photographs from 1972 feature Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She captured Bangabandhu giving a speech at the first Council Meeting of Awami League after the independence of Bangladesh. “I came specifically from Calcutta to photograph the event,” she said. Although at the time she favoured shooting in black and white, she chose to capture this event in colour because of the vibrant blue, white and red stripes of the shamiyana — ceremonial tent — that housed the event.

Shadab Khan took three wickets and then hit the winning runs as Pakistan beat Netherlands by six wickets with six overs to spare on Sunday, finally posting a victory at the Twenty20 World Cup.

Pakistan lost in a last-ball thriller in its tournament opener against archrival India and was upset by Zimbabwe before a thumping win over the Dutch to start a Group 2 double-header in Perth.

In the Western Australian capital, Pakistan’s pace attack restricted Netherlands to 91-9, with Shadab taking 3-22 and Mohammad Wasim Jr. returning 2-15.

Netherlands won the toss and opted to bat but couldn’t cope with Pakistan’s quick bowlers and slumped quickly to 26-3.

Only two Dutch players scored in double digits.

Pakistan replied with a sedate innings and knocked up the runs in 13.5 overs, finishing with 95-4.

Mohammad Rizwan scored 49 off 39 balls, combining with Fakhar Zaman (20) in a 37-run second wicket stand after Pakistan skipper Babar Azam (4) was run out.

Pakistan didn’t appear to be in any hurry to finish the proceedings, with Rizwan dismissed just in sight of the finish line and missing out his half-century. Shan Masood (12) was also out before Pakistan completed the formalities with Shadab’s boundary through mid-off.

“The last couple of games, we didn’t finish the games well,” Shadab said. “Today, we finished it off.”

Pakistan is fifth in the Group 2 standings, and Netherlands has been knocked out of contention after three consecutive losses in the Super 12 stage.

Kanye West drops to No. 3 on list of richest hip-hop stars as top brands cut ties

Over the past weeks, a number of brands have cut their ties with the rapper amid allegations of anti-Semitism. Ye, however, noted that the campaign against him proves that the industry seeks to crush any dissenting voices.

Rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye, lost his second position among the most wealthy hip-hop artists, according to US media. At the moment, the list is topped by JAY-Z, with $1.5 billion, while Diddy Combs – who is also believed to be a billionaire now is in second place. Kanye comes third with his $500 mln fortune, as he lost several lucrative deals, including one with Adidas.

Berner and Dr. Dre come 4th and 5th, with $410 mln and $400 mln respectively.

Earlier in October, the rapper prompted controversy by making several statements – among other things, he alleged that the Jews control music industry and the media, suppressing everyone who opposes the narrative.

As a result, Kanye, who was accused of anti-Semitism and “hateful” rhetoric, was dropped by Adidas, Gap Inc., Balenciaga, Vogue, and CAA talent agency, among others.

Sajeda Chowdhury’s death is a great loss, PM tells JS

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said the death of Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury is a great loss not only for Awami League but also for the country as she had significant contributions to the nation alongside the party.

“Her (Sajeda Chowdhury) death is a loss not only for the Awami League, but also for our country, the nation and me,” she said.

The Prime Minister made the remarks, joining the discussion over a condolence motion placed in the Parliament to express profound grief at the demise of two sitting lawmakers –Deputy Leader of the House Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury and lawmaker Sheikh Anee Rahman—as well as some noted personalities including Queen Elizabeth-II and five former MPs.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury moved the condolence motion in the House in the beginning of the 20th session of the 11th Parliament. Later, the Parliament unanimously adopted a condolence motion following the discussion.

The Prime Minister said Sajeda Chowdhury took the helm of Awami League and took it forward during a very tough time after 1975.

“She used to follow the ideology and principle of the party and tried to keep the party organised in that tough time,” the PM said adding that Sajeda Chowdhury used to stay in the frontline in every movement and struggle.

She said AL was tortured in the hands of all–Ziaur Rahman, HM Ershad and Khaleda Zia—during their regimes.

The Queen shared with her about her worry over the women leadership crisis in the commonwealth countries, environment and adverse impacts of climate change.

Recalling her memory, the PM said the Queen once took her to the balcony of Buckingham Palace and saw the plastic pollution at sea and told her that actions should be taken to prevent the pollution.

As per the tradition, the day’s business of Parliament was adjourned after the adoption of the condolence motion over the death of two sitting AL lawmakers.

League’s presidium member Syeda Sajeda Chowdhury, who was elected MP from Faridpur-2 constituency, died on September 11 last, while another AL lawmaker Sheikh Anee Rahman, who was elected from the women seat-19, died on 11 October last.
