AL programmes won’t counter BNP rallies: Quader

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader today said that his party does not believe in holding programmes just to counter those of other political parties.

“Programmes of the party will be held as per schedule. Various preparation meetings and series of programmes are being held by Awami League ahead of its national council,” he said.

Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said this at a preparatory meeting for the national council at AL president’s political office in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.

He warned that if BNP initiates chaos and violence, people of the country will give fitting response. “BNP is still a big sponsor of militancy and communal forces,” he said.

Regarding Mirza Fakhrul’s comment that BNP MPs are ready to resign from the parliament, he asked whether the parliament will be paralysed after their resignation.

He said it is BNP’s call to make, not that of the government.

Dr. Abdur Razzaq, Md. Farooq Khan, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya and Advocate Kamrul Islam, Joint General Secretary Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif and Dipu Moni, among other AL leaders, were present at the meeting.

Fakhrul slams Quader for making personal attack, accuses AL of plundering public money

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Sunday slammed his ruling party counterpart Obaidul Quader for what he said making personal attack and said the people know it very well how the Awami League leaders prospered from rags to riches.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he also said many of the party’s leaders are doing politics with their own earnings or by selling their ancestral property.

The BNP leader alleged that Quader made some objectionable comments about him on Saturday going beyond all moral decency.

“He (Quader) attacked me personally and said we get money from Dubai and I am lying on money. I would like to tell Obaidul Quader, don’t push us too hard. Earthworms can come out of the soil while digging,” he warned.

Fakhrul said everyone of Bangladesh knows what the Awami League leaders do and how they make money. “The people of this country know what you have been doing since the creation of Bangladesh. You are going from rags to riches overnight.”

He said the people of Bangladesh also have all information about who among the ruling party leaders are making the second homes in Canada, Singapore and Malaysia and who are siphoning off money abroad in many ways.

“We also know who own how many banks and who made how many houses in America…this is the money of taxpayers of this country. You’re looting that money,” the BNP leader taunted.

Fakhrul said this is very unfortunate that the general secretary of a major party made personal attack on his counterpart in an indecent manner. “If you attack on a personal level, you will not be able to deal with it. One day the information about how you plundered public money will be revealed.”

Earlier on Saturday, addressing a rally organised on the occasion of the triennial council for Dhaka district AL in the city’s Sher-E-Bangla Nagar area, Obaidul Quader alleged that Mirza Fakhrul is receiving funds from foreign countries to launch movements against the government.

“We have received information that Fakhrul is receiving money from Dubai,” he added.

Trashing Quader’s allegation, Fakhrul said, “We do politics by selling our ancestral property. We don’t do politics with anyone’s money. The people of our party and our every member are giving their own money to hold our rallies. This is our characteristics.”

Criticizing the AL general secretary for his comment that their Saturday’s rally was much bigger than that of BNP’s in Rangpur, he said the ruling party brought people to their programme by vehicles and using public money, but it could not fill 22,000 chairs kept at the venue. “So, you determine how many people gathered there.”

Fakhrul also questioned as to why the ruling party stop transport movement, let loss its cadres and attack opposition activists to obstruct BNP’s rallies if the party is so stronger.

“I can do this!”: Mosaddek to Shakib before last ball against Zimbabwe

Despite a last-minute scare, Bangladesh beat Zimbabwe by three runs today at the ongoing T20 World Cup in Brisbane. A no-ball came to the fore at the last moment, which could have cost the Tigers the match.

But Mosaddek Hossain, who bowled the last over, held his nerve well, and delivered a dot that earned Bangladesh a win — second at the T20 World Cup 2022.

After the match, Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh captain, said that Mosaddek told him he is “strong enough” to manage a dot in the last ball.

The no-ball was not Mosaddek’s fault at all. It was Nurul Hasan, the wicketkeeper, who grabbed the last ball of the 20th over from in front of the stump – a clear violation of the cricketing rule.

A wicketkeeper is bound to grab the ball from behind the stump. If a keeper violates this rule, the delivery is a no-ball, and this is exactly what happened in today’s match in Brisbane.

Zimbabwe needed 16 runs off the last over to seal the game. Mosaddek conceded one run off the first ball and scalped the wicket of Brad Evans on the second ball. The third and fourth deliveries were hit for four and six respectively by Richard Ngarava. Zimbabwe got close to sealing the match.

But off the fifth ball, Nurul did a wonderful job when Ngarava stepped up aiming a big shot and missed the ball. Nurul grabbed the ball and shattered his stumps in the blink of an eye.

At this point, Shakib warned Nurul about grabbing the ball from in front of the stumps. The TV replays showed that he grabbed the ball nearly from in front of the stumps. Shakib said he warned Nurul so that he doesn’t repeat it on the next delivery.

Nurul, however, forgot the pointer in the last ball (which was actually the sixth delivery) and grabbed the ball from in front of the stumps when Blessing Muzarabani missed it. Bangladesh broke into celebration before the umpires declared the sixth delivery a no-ball!

At that point, Zimbabwe’s target came down to four runs off a single delivery. Bangladesh were on the verge of an unexpected defeat. A bad delivery from Mosaddek or a good shot from Muzarabani could have written the story of the match in a different way.

Mosaddek held his nerve well, very well. He delivered a fullish delivery. Nurul, this time, picked it from behind the stumps and that’s it!

Bangladesh won the match by three runs in the midst of chaos and drama.

It was the first time when Bangladesh took on their familiar foe Zimbabwe in a World Cup encounter and they managed to win.

Ahead of all-important matches against subcontinental opponents Pakistan and India, this will surely boost the confidence of Shakib and his troops.

Primary schools to have one shift from Jan 2023: Secretary

All primary schools in the country will be operated under a uniform shift from January next year, Senior Secretary to Bangladesh Primary and Mass Education Ministry Aminul Islam Khan said today (October 30, 2022).

The secretary said this during a discussion with the media, on the occasion of his last working day at the ministry.

“Ninety percent work towards introducing one shift in all primary schools has been completed. We’ll also extend the duration of classes gradually,” Aminul said.

He added that the government has taken the decision due to its inability to construct new school buildings.

“We’ve taken the decision considering the growing number of students and teachers. Once the single shift starts, no school will be closed and no teacher will lose job. We’ll initiate pre-primary and primary education at the schools which have dual rooms, and we’ll construct new buildings where possible,” Aminul added.

Asked about the timing of classes, Aminul said that class hours will be extended to 4-5 hours from the current three hours.

“There is a difference between class hours in Dhaka city and the rural areas. In Dhaka, classes start early, while in the villages, classes start late. Our aim is to ensure the presence of teachers in classrooms. We want teachers to give lessons regularly and for a longer period of time. That’s why we’ll increase the class hours,” Aminul said.

Replying to a question, Aminul added that his Ministry will complete the process of transferring and recruiting primary school teachers before the coming Victory Day.

“We could’ve published the results of the Bangladesh primary teacher recruitment exam earlier. We didn’t do it as some teachers had requested the ministry for transfer, which was pending due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We’re trying so that teachers who have been with a school for 10-12 years can be transferred after every three years,” Aminul said.

Bangladesh Bank will go slow in calculating reserves following IMF formula

The Bangladesh Bank has recently agreed to calculate reserves following the international standard as advised by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), but the process will be slow considering it as a national sensitive issue, an official said on Sunday (October 30, 2022).

As per IMF suggestions, the central bank must follow the standard where spending for export development fund (EDF), loan to Sri Lanka and financing domestic projects from reserves must be excluded.

An executive director of Bangladesh Bank, preferring anonymity, told UNB on Sunday that in principle, the central bank has decided to follow the global standards to calculate the amount for foreign reserves.

“If the process is followed, the reserves will be reduced to $27.8 billion from $35.8 billion as declared earlier,” he said.

A visiting IMF delegation was informed that Bangladesh Bank has taken a policy decision to publish accounts in line with international standards.

However, as the matter is sensitive, it needs approval from the government high-ups on when it will start, he said.

In addition to following the IMF’s procedures, the accounts on the basis of the existing procedures will also be published.

Sector insiders say most of the world’s foreign exchange reserves are calculated according to the IMF’s Balance of Payments and International Investment Position manual.

But Bangladesh calculates net reserves and total foreign exchange reserves when it publishes the amount for foreign currency reserves. Funds provided to various sectors including EDF are excluded from the net calculation. Bangladesh Bank publishes the gross or total account of reserves.

Earlier Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Abul Kalam Azad said the central bank agreed to follow the IMF’s suggestions on various issues including foreign exchange reserves.

How AI is helping Japan convenience stores, supermarkets profit from reduced waste

It is 3pm. In-store computers at a convenience store chain in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Ward decide which food items should be discounted and by how much. Assorted sandwiches, one, 20 yen ($0.13) off, and crispy ham and lettuce sandwiches, three, 30 yen off, a display says.

Then a manager prints out price tags and goes about attaching them to items. Eight assorted sandwiches line the shelf, but only one, approaching its expiration date, is discounted.

More Japanese convenience stores and supermarkets are now using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse data such as past sales figures to decide what discounts to apply to perishable products to boost sales and cut food waste, reports Kyodo News Plus.

Lawson Inc, one of Japan’s largest convenience store chains, introduced a system in 2015 where AI at its head office advises store managers and experienced staff on product management at all stores.

To calculate how far to lower prices, the software considers a store’s sales, delivery times and the local weather conditions to propose a price that gives the product the best chance at being sold.

Store managers have been adjusting prices based on experience up until now, but relying solely on human judgment often resulted in undiscounted stock going to waste or items running out. The AI evaluates about 270 product categories four times every day to prevent this.

The system has led to improved business performance for the group. In 2021, in the six prefectures comprising northeast Japan’s Tohoku, the gross profit per store rose by 0.6 percent, while the cost incurred from wasted products was down 2.5 percent.

The system has enhanced the group’s financial performance. In the six prefectures that make up Tohoku in northeastern Japan, the gross profit per store increased by 0.6 percent while the cost incurred from wasted products was down 2.5 percent in 2021.

Since then, it has expanded further. Between June and September of this year, 162 Lawson outlets in the capital adopted the system. The company plans to start a full national rollout in fiscal 2023, According to Kyodo News Plus.

Japan’s major supermarket chain Aeon Retail has also developed an AI-powered discounting system which was implemented at about 350 stores by September. The system analyses the sales performance of each store and works to price in-store-prepared products at a level that ensures they are sold by closing time.

Each day at 5 pm, employees at Aeon’s Funabashi branch in Chiba Prefecture use a portable device to scan barcodes of the remaining items on the deli produce shelves. When a university student who works part-time there checked the 200-yen rolled Japanese-style omelette, the device displayed “18” – meaning, at 5pm, if there are 18 omelettes left, they presumably will be sold by the 11pm closing time.

There were 24 omelettes on the shelf at that moment so the employee entered “24 omelettes” and sent the data to the centralised system. It instantly calculated a 10 percent discount for the omelettes and generated 180 yen price tags.

“The introduction of the system appears to have been a welcomed development. It ended the practice of needing to make huge discounts right before closing time,” an official at Aeon Retail told Kyodo News Plus.
