Sultana Mishu, an housewife from Jatrabari area, accompanied her daughter who appeared in the tests.

“We are happy as the authorities this year decided to hold simultaneous admission tests in all eight divisions. The traffic was light on the streets and we faced no hassles,” she said.

Talking to UNB, Rajshahi University Vice Chancellor Golam Shabbir Sattar said, “There is no complaint about the admission test and we are working in coordination with law enforcers,”

Erratic gas supply hits had residents at Demra, neighbouring areas

When Taslima Keya rented a flat in Demra a few months ago she thought she struck a good deal as the house had gas connection.

It did not take long for her to realize that she made a mistake.

“True we have the gas connection, but most time of the day the line remains dry,” said Keya, a homemaker.

At Keya’s flat the natural fuel, supplied by Titas Gas, is available only after 1:30 pm which disrupts cooking her breakfast and lunch. Also, she faces trouble in preparing the dinner as the gas pressure goes down in the evening.

“This on-again off-again supply of gas has made our living in this area difficult,” said Keya, who is thinking of moving to a new location. The erratic supply of the cooking fuel has severely affected her daily routine. “What we are doing now is cooking all day’s meals at one go when the supply is available,” she said.

Another housewife Ayesha Islam Jharna, who lives in an adjoining area of Demra, has even a grimmer story to tell.

According to Jharna the gas supply goes out at 8 am and usually does not get back until 6 pm in her house and in the neighbourhood. “This gas misery is really forcing us to think about leaving this area. But we have to think twice as house rent in other areas is expensive and we can’t afford it,” she added.

She said, “If this situation goes on for long, it will really force us to change our time to cook. Cooking late in the night every day is really affecting my health. Children too complain of getting food late.”

“It is not possible to bring food from the hotels or restaurants every day. This is not only expensive but also unhygienic for us. We wonder how long the suffering will continue,”

Another housewife, Alifa Barsha, a resident of Ward 66, said, “We pay the bill for this fixed connection, but don’t get the supply.”

“There is no point in complaining. Our public representatives are also pretending not to see all this. At least I don’t see any effort on their part to solve this problem,” she said.

Residents of Demra and adjacent areas cheered when their areas were included in Dhaka South City Corporation. But this change has done little to improve the utility services in the areas. Disrupted gas supply has been a common woe for the residents.

The situation is the same in the newly added Shyampur, Matuail, Demra, Dania, Sarulia, Dakkhingaon, Nasirabad, and Manda in Dhaka South Corporation (DSCC). But Demra and adjacent areas are the hardest-hit areas.

Visiting these areas and talking to the land owners and tenants, UNB found that there is an acute gas crisis in every house. Even when the supply returns the pressure remains low, taking longer time to cook food.

According to locals not long ago the supply disruptions occurred only during the winter. But the supply is getting erratic even during the summer too. Now there is almost no gas pressure in most parts of Demra from morning to afternoon throughout the year. As a result, housewives are forced to finish cooking at night or in the early hours of the morning.

Residents of Konapara, Shahjalal Road, Dogai Bank Colony, Madinabagh, Basherpool, Barabhanga, Green City, Momenbagh, Al Amin Road, Bamail Colony, Bakranagar, Hijlatala, Khandaker Road, East Housing Dagai and other areas of Demra are worst sufferers.

Shaon Rahman, a resident of Konapara, said, “I am planning to shift from this area due to gas problem. Gas supply goes out at 8 and does not resume before 6pm. Sometimes it takes longer.”

The situation is no different at Konapara Shahjalal Road of Ward 64 where gas goes out from 8 am and resumes at afternoon. Sometimes it goes out at 7 pm and resumes at 10 pm.

Sadia, a resident of DSCC’s 66th ward, said there was no gas in Bakultala, East Boxnagar, from 8 am to 2 pm. “So I’ve no option but to finish cooking at night,” she said.

House owners are feeling the pinch too. They face difficulties in getting new tenants just because of the gas supply problem. This is also forcing them to rent out their houses at rates lower than the areas with smooth gas supply.

The alternative to piped cooking fuel is cylinder gas which digs deep into the pockets of the residents living in these middle-and-lower-middle class areas.

An official of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company admitted that there are problems in the supply. But he did not have any early solution.

Tikatuli Zone DGM Md. Nasimul Haque (Marketing) said that complaints regarding gas shortage have been coming from different areas of the capital for the past few days. The gas problem in Demra area is a little more acute than in other areas.

“We are trying our best to solve this problem so that our customers can get gas properly. We will limit the use of gas for households so all can use it proportionately,” he said.

He also said that households in some city areas including Demra are having supply shortage mainly due to the dearth of LNG supply to gas distribution companies too.

Shyampur, Dania, Matuail, Sarulia, Demra, Manda, Dakshingaon and Nasirabad unions were added to the city corporation as new wards in recent delimitation of the wards.

HC wants to know of steps against teachers in Rabindra University incident

The High Court on Thursday asked the Vice-Chancellor and the registrar of Rabindra University to inform it about steps taken against the teachers who were involved in forcefully trimming the hair of 14 students as punishment.

The court gave the respondents a month.

Bench of Justice Md Mojibur Rahman Mia and Md Kamrul Hossain Molla passed the order with a rule issued during a hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.

In the rule the court questioned why giving unlawful punishment of trimming hair before staff, students and inciting to suicide will not be considered illegal.

The court also questioned why legal actions will not be taken against Chairman of Cultural Heritage and Bangladesh Studies Department of RU, Farhana Yeasmin Baten, assistant professor Rajib Adhikari and Jannatul Ferdous Moon, as well as why direction to compensate the humiliated students with Tk 20 lakh each should not be given.

The rule also questioned why a directive to introduce a code of ethics for teacher, students would not be given to prevent such oppressive incidents at educational institutes.

Education secretary, Secretary of Home Ministry, RU VC, Registrar , Farhana Yeasmin Baten, professor Rajib Adhikari and Jannatul Ferdous Moon, Sirajganj Superintendent of police and Sadar police station’s Officer-in-Charge were made respondents to the rule.

Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallab presented the petitioner’s side during the hearing while Deputy Attorney General Nowroj Md Rasel Chowdhury stood for the state.

On September 29, Supreme court lawyer Barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallab and Mohammad Kausar filed the writ petition at the court.

“The punishment was not only illegal, it was humiliating to the students so much that one of them attempted suicide hence we filled the writ petition,” said barrister Mohammad Humayun Kabir Pallab.

On September 29, amid student protests, teacher Farhana Yeasmin Baten quit the three positions of assistant proctor, head of Cultural Heritage and Bangladesh Studies Department and syndicate member.

Earlier, the university authorities formed a five-member committee to probe the incident.

On September 26, while entering the examination halls to sit for their final exams, Professor Farzana Yasmin instructed an office assistant to trim the hair of 14 first year students, and he did it accordingly.

Unable to bear the humiliation, Nazmul Hasan Tuhin, 25, a student of the department and a resident of Magura district, consumed sleeping pills on Monday in an effort to take his own life.

He was undergoing treatment at Enayetpur Khaza Yunus Ali Medical College and Hospital.

However, Farhana denied the allegation and claimed it all is propaganda against her as she did not defer the exam as per the request of a few students.

Govt. mulls tunnel under Padma River between Daulatdia and Paturia: Quader

The government plans to build a tunnel under Padma River _ instead of a bridge _between Daulatdia and Paturia for the sake of the river’s navigability, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said on Friday.

His statement came amid speculations that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, basking in the successful construction of Padma Bridge, will build a second one over the river.

The country’s first-ever underwater expressway, Bangabandhu Tunnel, is being built under Karnaphuli River in Chattogram.

Policy to regulate OTT platforms in the works: Hasan Mahmud

A policy to extend government control over the OTT platforms (Over The Top platforms, a catch-all for commercial entertainment that reaches viewers through the internet) is being formulated to instill discipline in the sector, information minister Hasan Mahmud said Friday.

“The draft has been completed. If the policy is passed, the platforms will have to follow it and in case of any deviation, action will be taken as per the law.”

The minister said this while inaugurating a program marking the 23rd anniversary of private television broadcaster Channel I at the office of Impress Group in Tejgaon on Friday.

Regarding the operation of mobile courts to implement ‘clean feed’ or advertisement-free broadcast of foreign satellite channels from Friday, the minister said, “Thousands of crores that could have been invested behind domestic channels were invested in foreign channels in the form of advertisement.”

“If advertisements are not broadcast in foreign satellite channels, this would benefit the home-grown channels and trickle down to the entire economy,” he added.

Meanwhile, Association of Television Channel Owners – ATCO and Broadcast Journalist Center (BJC) welcomed the Information Ministry’s move to implement clean feeds in the country.

However, operators say that it is not possible to cut off just the advertisements from programmes being broadcast on foreign channels

As an apparent protest, cable operators have decided to stop broadcasting foreign channels in Bangladesh on Friday, although this act of seeming rebellion corresponds to exactly what the authorities asked.

Earlier on Thursday, Hasan Mahmud announced that mobile courts will carry out drives to ensure cable operators broadcast advertisement-free foreign TV channels in Bangladesh.

“We will conduct mobile courts from October 1 across the country. If the serial determined for television on cable lines at the tripartite meeting of the Ministry, the Television Owners’ Association and cable operators is not maintained and advertisements are shown, legal action will be taken against the distributors, operators who have the downlink approval of those channels,” he told reporters.

“In countries like India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal, cable operators can’t broadcast foreign TV channels without clean feeds,” the information minister said. “The operators were already informed in August about the drive. The excuse of foreign channels not sending clean feeds will no longer be tolerated.”

Robi to phase out 3G by 2023

Robi has become the first mobile operator in Bangladesh to set a date for the retirement of its third-generation (3G) mobile technology services.

To boost its 4G network, the telecom operator plans to phase out 3G technology by 2023. The phased transition will kick off from Chapainawabganj, Naogaon and Natore.

“The phasing out of 3G technology is not going to affect our regular voice services,” said the company.

Customers whose mobile data use is still limited to the 3G network in the areas where the transition takes place, will be proactively informed by Robi to switch to 4G.

The 3G customers will be communicated directly through SMS with clear direction on how they can switch to 4G service, said Robi.

By sunsetting the 3G network, it aims to free up its network resources to provide faster, more efficient and optimal data experiences to its customers with a 4G network.

Phasing out 3G will also allow the company to dedicate the entire data network resources to 4G which will result in further widened coverage, improved network quality, as well as stronger traffic carriage capacity in the Robi network.

This shift in device preference for 4G devices is providing an opportunity to offer higher throughput using the enhanced 4G network. Similar trends are observed in the global arena, where it is recognised that 2G and 4G technology will have a longer lifetime, while 3G is getting phased out, according to Robi.
