How to Reduce Air Pollution in Bangladesh

Air pollution is caused by an increased amount of gases and dust other than oxygen in the air. All the animals on earth take in oxygen and emit carbon dioxide during respiration. On the other hand, tress absorbs carbon dioxide and release oxygen. However, trees are declining in the world due to constant population growth and the indiscriminate destruction of green trees. So, we don’t have enough trees that can absorb all the emitted CO2. As a result, the level of CO2 in the air is increasing, and so is air pollution. There are some other reasons too.

Bangladesh is on the top of the list of the countries that have the worst air quality in 2020. So, it becomes highly important to work on reducing the air pollution in the country. What are the ways to bring the fresh air back? Let’s see.

Reasons behind the Air Pollution in Bangladesh

Vehicles, industry, population growth, and urbanization are some of the top causes of air pollution. Further, there are some other reasons too, many of which are beyond human control. But, most of the air pollution is caused by human beings in Bangladesh. The Ministry of Environment has identified 20 causes for air pollution in Bangladesh.

The main reasons are, Brickfields, road construction, reconstruction and repair, construction and digging of service companies, major development projects (expressways Metrorail), Construction of various installations including multi-storied buildings at government and private level, commercial extraction and collection of sand along roads or highways, transportation of sand, soil, cement, and other construction materials in trucks or lorries in open condition.

Adding to these, piles of household and municipal waste on the road and incineration of waste, removal of dirt from drains and dumping on the road, scattering of dust while cleaning the road with the broom uncovered areas along various roads, dirt, and dust of broken parts between sidewalks and road islands.

Further, Harmful emissions from unfit transport, mud on the wheels of various vehicles, burning of garbage of various educational institutions and government colonies, dumping of garbage and dust from various markets, shopping malls, and commercial buildings, dust in polluted areas of Dhaka city, use of sulfur-containing diesel and finally lack of public awareness.

Impact of Air Pollution in Bangladesh

According to the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO), “at least 200,000 people in Bangladesh could die as a result of respiratory diseases and long-term exposure to high concentrations of contaminated air.”

People in urban areas, especially children are facing the harmful effects of air pollution. According to 2020 study, 49% of the children who went to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment from November to February had respiratory problems. Though dust and pollution usually increased in the air of the capital, air pollution-related problems have become common.

In addition to shortness of breath, air pollution can cause stomach problems, lung problems, skin problems, asthma or allergy problems, eye and nose problems, infection, pregnancy problems, and even cancer. However, in the case of children, this pollution has a very serious effect which they may have to carry for the rest of their life.

Ways to Reduce Air Pollution

The environment of Bangladesh is getting worse day by day. The most valuable element of the environment is air, without which we cannot even think of surviving. And this element is much more damaged due to our unconsciousness. We are all knowingly engaging in activities that increase the amount of air pollution.

The Bangladesh government has already implemented some steps to control air pollution. Such as the government has banned the two-stroke three-wheeled baby taxis. The government has already worked on making the eco-friendly bricks culture. Bangladesh government has announced that, by 2025, the use of environmentally friendly bricks will be increased by 100%.

Besides these, there are some more steps to follow.

Ban on Older Vehicles

At present, air pollution has become severe in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, and other cities. Black smoke, dust, etc., from vehicles and factories, are responsible for air pollution. Expired cars, in particular, emit so much black smoke that it has been identified as one of the causes of air pollution. The black smoke emitted from these is basically uncut carbon which is emitted in the form of small particles. Many environmentalists have mentioned the presence of lead particles in the air of Dhaka.

Focus on Afforestation

Due to the current urbanization as well as deforestation, the amount of oxygen in the air is decreasing at a huge rate. As a result, the number of pollutants in the air is increasing. To reduce the available carbon dioxide in the air, afforestation is the only solution. Urban areas need more trees to plant.

Adequate tree planting should be done along river banks, roadsides, various government places, and gardens should be set up in front of government and private buildings. Besides these, as a citizen, we should also do our part by planting trees wherever we can.

Unplanned Garbage Management

At present more than one crore people live in Dhaka city. This huge population is also a cause of air pollution. Urban people tend to throw the garbage anywhere, and the government also doesn’t have any proper management to control garbage and wastages. This wastage spreads a bad smell in the rotting air and creates air pollution. So, the proper authority should take care of this issue to make the air fresh.

Monitoring

To prevent air pollution, the Department of Environment should conduct regular mobile courts and conduct activities on the basis of a specific plan to alleviate the suffering of the people and ensure regular monitoring.

Raising Public Awareness

Sources of air pollution must be stopped, and public awareness needs to be increased to stop all sources of air pollution. Individuals and organizations responsible for air pollution should be brought under punishment.

BB to banks: Do not directly deposit customers’ payments to e-commerce firms’ accounts

Bangladesh Bank has instructed banks not to deposit customer’s payments directly to digital commerce companies’ accounts.

A circular issued on Sunday by the Payment Systems Department of the central bank said that it is being observed some digital commerce firms are receiving payments from customers against goods and services and depositing the money directly to their own accounts.

This is being done in a bid to avert the Bangladesh government’s “Digital Commerce Operation Directives-2021” and also the directives issued by Bangladesh Bank’s PSD circular in this regard, it added.

In such a situation, the circular said, the instructions are that no advance payment against goods or services are allowed to be directly deposited to the accounts of digital commerce companies or any accounts belonging to any persons involved in the companies.

Secondly, the banks will allow operation of bank accounts of the digital commerce companies after ensuring the due diligence through checking the profile of the transactions, analyzing their characteristics and considering the overall risk in the transactions.

Banking industry sources said such instructions came against the backdrop of fraudulence by some digital commerce companies, known as E-commerce firms. Some of these firms had their operations suspended by the Commerce Ministry following allegations raised by consumers.

New Zealand’s Ajaz confident of adapting to local conditions well

Ahead of the five-match T20I series New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel on Sunday said they are confident of adapting to the conditions of Bangladesh.

The series will take off on September 1 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh are yet to win a match against the Blackcaps even though they played 10 T20Is.

“It’s a different condition from what we get at home. It’s bringing different sorts of challenges as well,” Ajaz said through a video message sent to the media on Sunday.

“It was a great net session today. We have got an idea about what we would get next. We didn’t have much expectation from the net session. We just wanted to have an idea, and prepare ourselves according to that,” Ajaz added.

In their last tour to Bangladesh, New Zealand had won only one match— a T20I. They were battered by the Bangladeshi spin attack. Ajaz said as a spinner, he is also excited to get the chance to play in Bangladesh.

“A friendly condition always excites every bowler. But we have a good batting line-up who plays spin well. We now are playing in their condition. They beat some big teams here. So we are not taking them lightly. We have to make sure that we play our best cricket. And at the same time who have to hone our skillset well so that we can perform well on the match days,” Ajaz said.

“We, the spinners, have discussed ourselves about the wickets here and how we should step up. We have been talking to Thilan Samaraweera (batting consultant of New Zealand) as well. He is experienced, he knows the sub-continent better than us. We are trying to know from him how they would bat. We have to understand these and play accordingly against them,” he added.

This series could be a great chance for the New Zealand team to prepare themselves ahead of the T20 World Cup taking place later this year in Oman and UAE. But they did not include any player in this series from their World Cup squad. Still, Ajaz believes a good show in this series could earn him more chances in future in white-ball cricket campaigns.

“I’m so excited to be able to play (white-ball cricket). It’s a great opportunity for me to play white-ball cricket, and we have so many matches to play in this format. Keeping that in mind, I’m eager to grab the chance. I’m not taking too much pressure that I have to do something crazy. I would love to stick to my basic skills and do what I can do better,” he said.

PM inaugurates work on Cox’s Bazar Airport’s runway upgradation

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday unveiled the foundation stone of the runway extension project of Cox’s Bazar Airport, aiming to enable it to offer a longer range of domestic and international passenger services.

The Prime Minister inaugurated the construction work on the maritime runway, the first of its kind in Bangladesh, virtually from her official residence Ganobhaban.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (Caab) has taken the Tk 1,568.86 crore project to construct the country’s longest runway by extending the existing 9,000-foot runway by another 1,700 on the Bay of Bengal by reclaiming land from the sea.

Upon completion of the US$ 185 million project, all types of large aircraft will be able to take off and land on the maritime runway.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) signed a deal with the Chinese joint venture of Changjiang Yichang Waterway Engineering Bureau (CYWEB) and China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) on February 9, 2021 to implement the crucial project.

Though the deadline to complete the construction of the project is May 10, 2024, steps have been taken to complete it by the end of 2023.

With the implementation of the project, the existing 9,000ft runway will be extended by 1,700 ft towards the Maheshkhali Channel.

On completion, the new 10,700-foot runway will allow much larger and wide-bodied aircraft like Boeing 777-300ER, Boeing 747-400 to use the airport, paving the way for the smooth operation of international flights.

The government in 2019 took the initiative to expand the runway to upgrade it to international standards and offer foreign holidaymakers the hassle-free trips to the world’s longest unbroken sea beach.

The runway extension will be built by filling some parts of the sea on the Maheshkhali channel.

At first geo tubes will be placed under the sea bed and then water will be removed through dredging. Later, the excavation process and sand filling activities will start.

Then, the excavated area will be layered with sand, followed by concrete blocks being placed. The next phase would be the sand layer layout for the runway.

The English bowlers executed their tactics well, bowling India out for only 78 runs in the first innings.

After the English pacers’ excellent bowling, the local supporters were anticipating some strong batting displays from the English batsmen. The English top order did not disappoint the home crowd, scoring 350 runs for the loss of only four wickets before the Indian pacers made a dramatic comeback in the afternoon session of day two.

English skipper Joe Root was brilliant with the bat. He played a 121-run knock in 165 balls. Rory Burns (61), Haseeb Hamid (68), and Dawid Malan (70) contributed as well. After taking a big 354-run first-innings lead, England were finally bowled out for 432 in the first session of day 3.

India are presently ranked second (119 points), only 7 points behind the table-topper New Zealand. On the other hand, England are in fourth place (107 points), just one point behind third-placed Australia. Both teams have a strong chance to rise up the ICC team rankings if they win the remaining matches in the series.

Verdict

The ENG vs. IND 2021 Test series is now evenly balanced after each team claiming a victory. India’s captain Virat Kohli hasn’t hit an international century in 54 innings. He must stand up in the next two matches for the sake of India. While English captain Joe Root has been in scintillating form this year. His batting made the difference in the third Test, and he will be the main man for the remainder of the series. The fourth match of the series will begin on September 2 at the Oval in London.
