Protesting worker dies running from police in Savar

A female worker died after hitting her head on an electric pole Sunday, while running away after police intervened at a laid off workers’ protest with tear gas in the Ashulia area of Savar.

The deceased was identified as Jasmine, a sewing operator of Gold Tex Factory in Savar EPZ.

Around 7am, workers of Lenny Fashion Factory in Dhaka EPZ blocked the road near New EPZ area on Nabinagar-Chandra highway, demanding payment of their arrears since January.

Five of the workers got injured after police intervened to quell the protest, and Jasmine succumbed to her injuries on the way to hospital, said the protestors.

The incident happened as workers started running helter-skelter following the police’s intervention with rubber bullets and tear gas, they said.

Superintendent of Industrial Police-1 Md Asaduzzaman said they had to use water cannons to scatter hundreds of workers who were demonstrating and blocking the road for hours, paying no heed to any request to relent.

The protesting workers said the Indian owner of their factory has not visited amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and on February 8 the two factories owned by him were closed, without payment of two months’ wages and provident funds for some 600 workers.

Having not received their dues in over four months, the workers were left with no option but to take to the streets in protest.

Thunderstorm Lightning Struck Safety Tips: Stay Prepared

Every year more than 150 people die in Bangladesh due to lightning. The number of casualties has also increased this year. Several people were killed in lightning strikes in Sirajganj, Chittagong, Patuakhali, Manikganj, Feni, Madaripur, Noakhali, Munshiganj, and Shariatpur this month (June 2021). Lightning also harms the environment so it’s a comprehensive problem that needs a full-scale approach.

Reasons behind the recent increase in Lightning Struck in Bangladesh

The Save the Society and Thunderstorm Awareness Forum has blamed the abnormal increase in lightning on global warming and a decline in the number of tall trees.

Every degree increase in temperature increases lightning by 10 percent or more. Recently, the upper and lower parts of the dense black clouds are floating as two pools. As a result, the level of electricity flow between them is increasing and lightning is being created. The recent increase in the density of black clouds has resulted in an increase in the number of bolts of lightning in line with rainfall.

Impacts of Lightning Struck during Thunderstorms

Impact on people

Lightning produces about 10,000 amperes of electricity which releases 50,000 Kelvin heat in milliseconds. That is why if lightning strikes a person directly, his/her body is charred before one sees it coming.

According to the US public health agency CDC, people attacked by lightning suffer from burns, shock, and trauma. In some people, weakness, confusion, skin damage, and even stroke can occur. Lightning also causes heart attacks.

Many people do survive a thunderstorm but none of them can lead a normal life. When lightning enters the brain, its heat and sparks burn the brain cells and render them useless. In the case of survivors, therefore, trauma, mental disorders, personality changes, etc. are observed.

Ways to survive during Lightning Struck

1) April-June is the busiest period for thunderstorms. Lightning phases usually last for up to 45 minutes. It is advisable to stay at home at this time.

2) If one sees thick black clouds, refrain from going out of the house. Wear rubber shoes in case of emergency.

3) If in a paddy field or playground under the open sky, quickly sit with your head on your toes and your fingers on your ears.

4) As soon as possible to take shelter under the building or concrete tent. Tin sheds must be avoided.

5) If inside the car, keep the body as safe as possible from the metal part of the car. Take shelter under a concrete tent in a quick corner with the car.

6) Refrain from using all kinds of electrical appliances including mobiles, laptops, computers, TVs, refrigerators. If you get a hint of lightning, unplug them beforehand.

7) Refrain from using umbrellas with metal handles. In this case, you can use a plastic or wooden-handled umbrella.

8) If you are in the sea or river at this time, stop fishing and stay under the boat tent.

9) Do not touch the metal faucets, metal railings, pipes, etc. of the house.

10) If there are a few people together in a wide area, each move 50 to 100 feet away.

Dangerous places for Lightning Struck

1) Open during thunderstorms such as paddy fields, fields, rivers, and high places are the most dangerous. There is a high probability of lightning in a passenger tent or a large tree in a wide-open space.

2) High trees or electricity poles are more likely to be struck by lightning, so it is not safe to be near trees or poles at this time.

3) If at home, don’t stand near the window.

4) If you are on the road, you must avoid frozen water and electricity.

What to do if someone is injured by lightning

Do not touch the injured person immediately. Otherwise, you too may get shocked. Try to bring back breathing with CPR as first aid. Massage the hands and feet continuously. Take him to the nearest hospital as soon as possible.

The best way to stay safe from Lightning Struck

Since lightning is a sudden natural disaster, there is no alternative but to be prepared for it in advance.

1) Identify the more disaster-prone areas and work to increase public awareness there beforehand. As the death rate is high in remote areas, warn farmers, fishermen, and those who work in the open by providing accurate knowledge about lightning.

2) The best way is to plant enough trees that grow taller quickly. In this case, you can plant more palm and coconut trees. Thus, as a result of afforestation, it will be possible to restore the balance in the weather.

3) Make sure to install lightning rods in every building in the city.

4) It is necessary to build high towers privately as well as in Government. The lightning will flow over the tower. The locality will survive.

Steps to take after Lightning Struck

Since the central part of the country is more affected by lightning, the amount of damage to the people of that region is more. All sections of the government and the private sector should come forward to help them. Make sure that the injured receive proper treatment and that the families of the victims receive money and work to support themselves.

Over to you

In order to avoid lightning, one should seek help from God, since in this situation man has nothing to do immediately. Humans are also to blame for this disaster as activities like global warming and declining vegetation are caused by human beings’ actions. But improving this situation is not impossible. Everyone needs to work together.

Raise tobacco prices, taxes: Activists

Anti-tobacco activists on Sunday called upon the government to raise tobacco prices and taxes, saying that the proposed budget is an impediment towards achieving the goal of making Bangladesh a tobacco-free country.

If the proposed budget is passed, it will make tobacco products even more affordable and increase their use among the youth and the poor, putting the public health at a greater risk, they said.

Members of Parliament (MPs), economists and public health experts said this in an online event on the proposed budget, jointly arranged by PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) and Anti-Tobacco Media Alliance (ATMA).

In a presentation made at the event, PROGGA said the proposed budget has kept the prices and taxes on the low and medium tier cigarettes unchanged, which constitute around 72 and 16 percent of Bangladeshi cigarette market respectively.

But the prices for 10 sticks of high and premium tier cigarettes have been raised by only Tk 5 and Tk 7 (5.5 percent hike), setting the prices at Tk 102 and 135 respectively. The increase (5 percent) is very negligible compared to the increase in per capita income of the country (9 percent), said the anti-tobacco body.

Besides, the prices of bidi and smokeless tobacco – Jorda and Gul — have been kept unchanged, which would undoubtedly increase the use of these products and put the low-income people in a greater health risk.

Also Read: National Budget: Progga, ATMA for hiking tobacco goods

Addressing the event, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, said the low and medium tiers of cigarettes need to be merged and brought under specific taxation in the final budget of this year.

“Tobacco claims lives 10-15 times higher than the Covid pandemic has done in one year. So, why shouldn’t we be worried about tobacco?” he said.

Noted economist Dr Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Convener of the National Anti-Tobacco Platform, said they earlier called for increased prices and introduction of specific taxes for all the tobacco products. “But the proposed budget doesn’t reflect any of these demands.”

He said the proposed budget can be changed if the Prime Minister wants.

Economist Dr Nazneen Ahmed, Senior Research Fellow of the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), said the prices of low tier cigarettes need to be increased to discourage the youth from getting hooked on tobacco. “We want the youth of the future to be healthier. Only then we can utilise the benefits of demographic dividends to develop our country,” she said.

Dr Mahfuz Kabir, Research Director of Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies (BIISS), said the low and medium tiers make up for around 88 percent of the total cigarette market of the country. “So, the cigarette prices of these tiers should get a hike so that revenues could increase and health risks could be reduced,” he said.

Dr Syed Mahfuzul Huq, National Professional Officer of WHO; Md Mostafizur Rahman, Lead Policy Adviser of Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids (CTFK), Bangladesh; and Dr Sohel Reza Choudhury, Professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Research of the National Heart Foundation, among others, spoke at the event.

Nadira Kiron of ATMA conducted the event, while Md Hasan Shahriar of PROGGA placed the tobacco-related proposals to be incorporated in the final budget for 2021-22 fiscal year, said a press release.

The proposals include introduction of a tiered specific excise (supplementary duty -SD) with uniform tax burden (SD share of 65% of final retail price) across all cigarette brands; setting the retail price for 10 sticks cigarette in the low-tier at Tk 50, medium-tier at Tk 70, high-tier at Tk 110, premium-tier at Tk. 140; setting the retail price for 25 non-filtered bidi sticks at Tk 25, for 20 filtered sticks at Tk 20, for 10-gram Jorda and Gul at Tk 45 and 25 respectively.

According to PROGGA, if the prices of all tobacco products are increased through imposition of specific taxes, it will encourage 1.1 million people to quit smoking, prevent premature deaths of 390,000 smokers, and earn Tk 3400 crore additional revenue from cigarettes as supplementary duty, health development surcharge and VAT.

HC summons relevant documents to verify Khaleda’s date of birth

The High Court on Sunday summoned birth registration, educational certificate, passport and other documents regarding her date of birthday from BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia.

At the same time, the High Court wanted to know what information the government has in this regard.

The Foreign Secretary, the Election Commission, the Director General (DG) of the Department of Health, the Director General of the Passport Department and the Board of Secondary and Higher Education were instructed to submit the documents within the next two months.

The virtual dual bench of High Court Justice M. Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md. Mostafizur Rahman passed the order following the hearing on a writ petition challenging the validity of Khaleda’s birthday celebration on August 15.

The court issued a rule besides giving interim directions.

The rule sought an explanation as to why the failure to take legal action against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for using different dates for her birthday, including August 15, should not be declared illegal.

Home and Health Secretaries, IG of Police, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner and officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station were asked to respond to the rule.

On May 31, thewrit petition was filed by Supreme Court lawyer Mamun-ur-Rashid, who is a Juba League presidium member and former general secretary of Tangail Chhatra League.
