World Refugee Day should serve as stark reminder to politicians to do more: UNHCR

The World Refugee Day, which observed on June 20, should serve as a stark reminder to politicians of the need to do more to prevent and resolve conflict and crises and of the imperative to protect people irrespective of their race, nationality, beliefs or other characteristics, of the need to speak out and fight injustice, instead of fueling division and fomenting hate and to resolve to find pragmatic and lasting solutions to crises instead of blaming others or vilifying victims, said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi in a message ahead of the World Refugee Day.

”Two days ago, we announced that an unprecedented number of people have been forced to flee their homes. More than 82.4 million men, women and children have had their worlds turned upside down by war, violence and persecution. While the rest of us spent much of the last year at home to stay safe, they had to run from their homes just to stay alive.” ”And as world leaders are seemingly unable or unwilling to make peace, more and more displaced people pay the price. In the past three years alone, some one million children were born into a life of exile. What will their futures hold? What opportunities will they have to achieve their potential?,” Grandi asked.

Simply put, he noted, leaders need to step up and work together to solve today’s global challenges.

”Yet World Refugee Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the fortitude of refugees. Those who have been stripped of everything and yet carry on, often bearing the visible and invisible wounds of war, persecution, and the anxiety of exile,” he added.

”Over the past several months, a time dominated by the pandemic, we have seen that refugees – while needing, deserving, and having the right to international protection, safety, and support – also give back to each other and to their host communities.” ”When given the chance, they have run to the front lines of the COVID-19 response as doctors, nurses, cleaners, aid workers, care givers, shopkeepers, educators, and many other roles, providing essential services as we collectively battled the virus. We have seen them and their hosts selflessly share meagre resources and help lift those in the greatest of need,” he further added.

”Next month, we will see them in another arena demonstrating what can be achieved if included in society and given the same opportunities as the rest of us: refugee athletes will approach the starting line as they compete with the world’s best in the Tokyo Olympics,” he continued.

”So on World Refugee Day, as we pause to express solidarity with refugees in our communities and around the world, I hope each of us will also acknowledge and admire the drive, determination, and contributions made by people forced to flee. My colleagues and I have the privilege of witnessing their tenacity and achievement every day, which – especially today – should be a source of inspiration for everyone, everywhere,” he concluded.

World Refugee Day is observed every year on June 20 to respect and honour the courage and resilience of refugees across the world. The unprecedented and prolonged coronavirus pandemic has exposed the vulnerability of refugees who hardly have any resources to fight the health and economic crisis.

This year’s World Refugee Day theme – together we heal, learn and shine – aims at people belonging to all faiths, all over the world, working together to welcome stateless persons, displaced people, refugees and others who have been forced to flee their homes.

Who is the favorite to win DPL T20 Cricket League?

The ongoing Dhaka Premier Division T20 Cricket league’s battle for the championship and relegation began on Saturday (June 19). The first day’s Super League matches were postponed due to inclement weather. Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club, Prime Bank Cricket Club, Abahani Ltd, Gazi Group Cricketers, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, and Mohammedan Sporting Club are playing in the super league. Legends of Rupganj, Partex Sporting Club, and Old DOHS Sports Club were the bottom three clubs in the points table, and they are currently fighting for survival. n this article, we discussed who is the favourite to win DPL T20 2021 Cricket League?

DPL T20 2021: Rating Chances of all super league teams winning the tournament

Prime Bank Cricket Club – 7/10

Prime Bank finished the DPL T20 2021 round-robin league as the table-topper, winning nine of eleven games and losing only two. The opening combination of Tamim Iqbal and RonyTalukdar is one of the most important aspects of Prime Bank’s success. The pair has gotten off to a strong start at the top, scoring runs freely.

However, Tamim will be unavailable in the Super League, which will undoubtedly upset Prime Bank. While skipper AnamulHaque has made a few mistakes, otherwise he has performed well for the most part. MohamadMithun, Mustafizur Rahman, and Shoriful Islam have also contributed to the team’s consistency throughout the campaign.

Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club–8/10

Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club finished second on the points table in the Dhaka Premier League 2021, making them one of the most consistent teams in the league. Prime Doleshwar performed well as a team in the first phase of the tournament, winning seven of their eleven matches. They have a few talented players who are in excellent form. Prime Doleshwar’s best players are top-order batsman SaifHasan and pace bowler Kamrul Islam Rabbi.

Abahani Ltd – 9/10

Abahani Ltd haven’t been the most consistent team this season despite finishing third in the first phase of DPL 2021’s points table. The batting unit of Abahani Ltd, particularly two young players Mohammad Naim and MunimShahriar, contributed significantly to the team’s success.

However, Abahani does have the strongest team in the competition and they will come back strong in the super league stage. Afif Hossain, Mohammad Saifuddin, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Taijul Islam are among the top talents on Mushfiqur Rahim’s side. They may also rediscover their form in the Super League phase.

Gazi Group Cricketers – 8/10

The Gazi Group Cricketers initially struggled in the tournament, but they have gradually regained their rhythm and secured a spot in the Super League. With 14 points, they finished fourth in the first stage.

Gazi Group Cricketers have a number of quality players in their squad who can win games on their own. They have Akbar Ali, Soumya Sarkar, Yasir Ali, and MahediHasan in addition to skipper Mahmudullah and veteran MominulHaque. Gazi have a chance to win the championship if they can stay consistent during the super league stage.

Mohammedan Sporting Club – 6/10

Shakib Al Hasan guided Mohammedan Sporting Club to secure a place in the Super League. However, the best all-rounder is unavailable for this round, and ShuvagataHom has taken over as Mohameddan’s captain in the crucial stage.

Mohammedan came in fifth place in the points table, with six victories and four losses, indicating that they struggled in the first round. Mohammedan has a minimal chance of winning this year’s competition because their players are inexperienced compared to the other teams. Shamsur Rahman, Irfan Sukkur, and Abu Hider Rony are three of their most important players.

Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club – 7/10

The defending champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club are placed sixth in the first round of the DPL T20 2021. Out of the eleven games, they won six and lost four. Captain NurulHasanSohan has been in terrific form from the beginning of the campaign.

The squad has notable match-winners, but they haven’t fared well in the competition. Ziaur Rahman, Mohammad Ashraful, Elias Sunny, and ImrulKayes will have to perform well in the Super League round if Sheikh Jamal want to defend the title.

Verdict

After examining the strengths and weaknesses of the teams, it is clear that all the teams have a fair chance to win this season’s DPL T20 Cricket League. However, it will undoubtedly be a competitive round, as all of the clubs are keen to win the championship. Teams must be consistent in order to win this sort of competition. Overall, we believe the best team will win the tournament.

Mango Mania: The Fastest on Demand Mango Delivery Network by Chaldal.com

The Mango is the king of fruits. It is difficult to find people who do not like to eat mango. Not only is it incomparable in taste and smell, but both ripe and raw mangoes have many nutritional properties. But many people face confusion while buying mango from the store, as it is difficult to know the mango varieties. Also, buying from the store is time-consuming and risky, especially during this covid-19 pandemic. Besides, the controversy about chemically modified mangoes is there too. With these in mind, the e-commerce site chaldal.com has started a unique mango delivery service called Mango Mania.

Here we will give you an in-depth idea of Mango Mania and the current situation of Bangladesh’s Mango business.

Mango Business in Bangladesh

According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, the country produces about 12 lakh tons of mangoes a year. Further, this production is increasing every year. M Asaduzzaman, a former research director at the Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS), said the mango production has increased due to the increased demand. Besides, the health awareness among the people also increased at the same time as their increased purchasing power.

Mango business is nothing new in the context of Bangladesh. However, before the advent of digital media, a mango seller had to collect mangoes from the orchard and sell them to distant warehouse keepers. In most cases, sellers do not receive a fair price. Again, the money would have been left for many days, and many times sellers could not even withdraw the money.

However, the current picture of mango sales is very different. The use of the internet and social media has opened the door to a new possibility. Many are now creating pages on social media and reaching out directly to buyers through e-commerce. And since there are no middlemen, sellers are getting better prices through digital and are able to sell in cash.

Chaldal’s Business Structure

Chaldal.com is an online shop for home food items, health and beauty products, but it is mainly popular for grocery items. Since we don’t get much time to do grocery shopping every day. At Chaldal.com, you can buy products like rice, lentils, curry, vegetables, fish, meat, frozen food, soap, toothpaste, shampoo, baby cosmetics, stationery, and all kinds of daily necessities. Their main goal is to save their customer’s valuable time. That’s why they deliver the necessities to their customers as quickly as possible at their doorsteps every day. The world-famous magazine Forbes selected the top 10 startups among the top 500 new ventures in the world in 2019. Chaldal was at number 9 in the only top 10 from Bangladesh.

Using digital technology, Chaldal.com is delivering daily necessities to more than 6 lakh customers in more than 230 areas of the country, including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Chittagong and Jessore, at a delivery charge of just Tk 9. And more than 2500 employees of Chaldal.com are doing this task very efficiently and regularly.

Mango Mania by Chaldal

Mango Mania is an initiative by e-commerce chaldal.com. It is basically an on-demand 1-hour mango delivery service. It is available in all four areas Chaldal operates in Dhaka, Chittagong, Narayanganj and Jessore.

The service was launched in 2019 for a test purpose but has seen significant growth this year. The company claimed it as one of the biggest on-demand mango delivery networks. Chaldal currently delivers tens of tons of mangoes per day. This season it has already delivered over 450 tons so far.

How does Mango Mania Work?

The procedure is very simple; Chaldal has a contract with mango producers across the country to find out the chemical-free and high-quality mangoes from the garden. After sourcing, the mangoes then arrive at Chaldal’s vegetable network to check the quality and do the packaging. After that, the packages are sent to 25 warehouses within the four-coverage area.

Each package comes in 3 Kg, and the price starts from BDT 179 per package. Customers can order as many packages as they want, which depends on availability. After ordering, the customer will get delivered within one hour at their doorsteps.

Packaging and Returning Policy

For the packaging, Chaldal uses an environment-friendly brown paper box hooked with carrying ropes. The packaging ensures that the mangoes won’t get damaged. However, if you still get the damaged and low-quality products delivered, they offer a no-questions-asked return policy. Which means you can return your product.

Through this customer-friendly returning policy, customers can get a replacement for any partial or full damaged products or even if the quality is compromised. However, the returning process is simple. The customer can simply contact Chaldal through customer service or Facebook and file a complaint. Usually, the company sends a new fresh box on the same day or sometimes the next day. Further, they also provide an equivalent refund if you want.

Availability of the Service

The stock is available almost all day. But sometimes, the company may run low on stock for a few hours as stocking constantly is not an easy task. Moreover, sometimes they end up with overstock and face some damages too. But Chaldal makes sure that the customer gets the delivery on time.

Relationship with the Supplier

As Chaldal directly works with the garden owners, the company maintains a good relationship to get the supply the whole season. However, Chaldal recently started a bidding system for the supplier when 20-25 garden owners attend the bids every day with their stock.

Nevertheless, the company works hard to make sure that the gardeners get the best possible price for supplying the best quality product.

Final Words

Every day 8-9 thousand customers are buying mangoes from Chaldal.com. The taste, smell and meaning of getting the best mango will no longer be limited to any particular area. Anyone who orders from Chaldal online can buy the best, juicy and chemical-free mangoes of Chapainawabganj selected from the garden.

Delta variant behind spike of cases in Portugal

Portuguese authorities have confirmed suspicions that the new delta variant of the coronavirus is driving a spike in new cases in the Lisbon region.

Portugal’s National Health Institute said Sunday that the highly infectious variant that was first found in India has a prevalence of 60% of new cases in the nation’s capital.

The recent surge in infections caused authorities last week to ban all travel in and out of Lisbon on the weekends. The measure went into effect on Friday. The Lisbon metropolitan area has around 2.8 million inhabitants.

HERE’S WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING:

LONDON — London soccer stadiums have been transformed into “super pop-up” vaccination sites as Britain tries to get younger adults to be inoculated against COVID-19.

More than four-fifths of adults in the U.K. have had at least one shot of vaccine, and the government wants everyone 18 and up to have a jab by July 19, the date earmarked for the lifting of remaining social and economic restrictions.

Hundreds of people lined up Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur’s north London stadium, following similar events Saturday at venues including Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium in west London, and east London’s Olympic Stadium, home to West Ham United.

Britain is seeing a surge in coronavirus cases driven by the more infectious delta variant first identified in India.

SEOUL, South Korea — South Korea says it plans to allow social gatherings of up to six people and allow restaurants and cafes to operate until midnight in the densely populated Seoul area, starting from July 1.

Health Minister Kwon Deok-cheol said Sunday the eased distancing rules are aimed at “finding a balance between quarantine and (effort to) return to normal amid the prolonged COVID 19 pandemic.”

After a two-week transition period, health authorities plan to allow gatherings of eight people in the Seoul area from July 15. Currently, authorities allow gatherings of up to four people and permit restaurants, cafes and other businesses to operate until 10 p.m.

Restrictions on the number of people at private gatherings in the non-Seoul area will be lifted.

Kwon says about 30% of South Korea’s 52 million people have received their first dose of coronavirus vaccines. He says South Korea reported an average of 444 new virus cases each day last week, a 15% decrease from the previous week.

BEIJING — China has announced that more than 1 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccine had been administered in the country.

The National Health Commission did not say Sunday how many people had been vaccinated. As elsewhere, most of the vaccines in China are given in two doses.

The pace of vaccinations has accelerated in the country of 1.4 billion people after a slow start. The total number of doses given doubled from 500 million in less than a month, according to government tallies.

China has approved seven domestically developed vaccines and recently approved two of them for children as young as 3 years old. Regulators haven’t approved any non-Chinese vaccines so far, although they appear to be moving toward doing so for the one developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Anti-government protesters have taken to the streets in cities across Brazil as the nation’s confirmed death toll from COVID-19 soared past half a million.

It’s a tragedy many critics blame on President Jair Bolsonaro’s attempt to minimize the disease.

Thousands gathered Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, waving flags reading “Get out Bolsonaro.” Other marchers hoisted posters reading: “500 thousand deaths. It’s his fault.”

Similar marches took place in at least 22 or Brazil’s 26 states. They were promoted by left-wing opposition parties who have been heartened by Bolsonaro’s declining poll ratings with next year’s presidential race looming.

Bolsonaro’s supporters have taken more often to the streets over the past month, in large part because many agree with his dismissal of restrictions meant to stifle the coronavirus and anger that lockdown measures have hurt businesses.

Critics say such messages, as well as Bolsonaro’s promotion of disproven treatments such as hydroxychloroquine, have contributed to the soaring death toll and a sluggish vaccine campaign that has fully inoculated less than 12% of the population. The country of some 213 million people is registering nearly 100,000 new infections and 2,000 deaths a day.

___

MOSCOW — Russia’s national coronavirus taskforce on Saturday reported 17,906 new infections, more than double the daily tally from early June.

More than half of the new infections are in Moscow, where cases have tripled this month. The soaring case count has caused alarm among officials, who have increased measures to obstruct the spread.

Moscow, its outlying area and two other Russian regions this week ordered mandatory vaccinations for workers in retail, education and other service sectors. Moscow has closed food courts in shopping centers and restricted restaurants and bars in the capital to takeout orders from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Russians are widely resistant to vaccinations and only about 12% of the population has received a shot. Nearly 5.3 million cases have been reported in the country of 146 million, with 128,911 deaths, but experts consider both numbers undercounts.

___

KABUL — Afghanistan’s is racing to ramp up supplies of oxygen as a deadly third surge of COVID-19 worsens, a senior health official told The Associated Press in an interview Saturday.

The government is installing oxygen supply plants in 10 provinces where up to 65% of those tested in some areas are positive, health ministry spokesman Ghulam Dastigir Nazari said. By WHO recommendations, anything higher than 5% shows officials aren’t testing widely enough, allowing the virus to spread unchecked.

Afghanistan carries out barely 4,000 tests a day and often much less.

Afghanistan’s 24-hour infection count has also continued its upward climb from 1,500 at the end of May when the health ministry was already calling the surge “a crisis,” to more than 2,300 this week.

___

LONDON — Thousands of heavy metal fans were camping, singing — and even moshing — on Saturday at Britain’s first full music festival since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

The three-day Download Festival, taking place at Donington Park in central England, is one of a series of test events to see whether mass gatherings can resume without triggering outbreaks of COVID-19.

About 10,000 fans, a tenth of the festival’s pre-pandemic attendance, secured tickets to watch more than 40 U.K.-based bands including Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes, Enter Shikari and Bullet for My Valentine.

Attendees all took COVID-19 tests before the event, and don’t have to wear masks or follow social distancing rules during the festival.

PARIS — French police clashed with party-goers as they tried to break up an unauthorized rave in western France, authorities said Saturday. A 22-year-old man lost his hand and several others were injured amid the violence, including police.

The tensions erupted in a field near the Brittany town of Redon on Friday night, just two days before France lifts an overnight virus curfew that’s been in place for more than eight months and has prompted growing frustration among young people.

Police repeatedly fired tear gas and charged clusters of violent partygoers who hurled metal balls, gasoline bombs and other projectiles at security forces, according to images shared online and comments by the top government official in the region, prefect Emmanuel Berthier. Local authorities estimated about 1,500 people took part in the event despite a local ordinance banning it.

France is lifting the overnight curfew on Sunday.
