Dhaka: Jahangirnagar University (JU) authorities have fined 20 students of the Physics and History departments a total of Taka 6.15 lakh over two separate incidents of ragging. The students have also been barred from their ongoing and scheduled examinations until they pay the fines, according to two office orders signed by JU Acting Registrar A B M Azizur Rahman today. The punishments followed a decision of the university Syndicate at a meeting on September 13.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the orders detailed that eight Physics students from the 2024-25 academic session were fined Taka 3.65 lakh for ragging juniors from the 2025-26 session at Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Haque Hall on July 20. The victims were allegedly subjected to verbal abuse, inhumane treatment, and forced sit-ups. The eight students were fined between Taka 35,000 and Taka 50,000 each.
In another incident on July 3, 12 History students from the 2024-25 session were fined Taka 2.50 lakh for allegedly ragging 13 juniors at the university school and college field. They were accused of verbal abuse, forcing juniors to hold their ears, and "teaching manners" through ragging. The students were fined between Taka 20,000 and Taka 30,000 each.
The punishments were imposed under Section 3(2)(d) of the Jahangirnagar University Students' Disciplinary Ordinance 2018. The university warned that stricter action would be taken if the students repeat such offences.
