2 killed, 40 hurt as bus returning from school picnic overturns in Gopalganj

Two people were killed, and at least 40 others – mostly students – injured as a bus carrying a group of picnic-goers from a Jashore school overturned and crashed into a roadside tree in Gopalganj's Kashiani Thursday night, police said.

The deceased were identified as managing committee member Biddyut Kumar Biswas, 50, and lab assistant Sudipto Biswas, 34, of Bakri Bahumukhi Secondary School in Bagherpara of Jashore, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tajul Islam said.

Of the injured, 15 were admitted to Jahsore General Hospital and the rest to other hospitals, he added.

Students, teachers and staff of Bakri School went to Gopalganj's Tungipara on an annual picnic on three buses Thursday morning, Biswajit Kumar Pal, an assistant teacher of the school, said.

"As we were returning from the picnic, one of the buses overturned and hit a roadside tree while trying to overtake another bus in the Bhatiapara intersection of Kashiani upazila around 8pm. Biddyut Kumar immediately died from the impact of the crash, and others were critically injured."
