Rangpur: Eighteen injured passengers have been sent to different hospitals as six vehicles collided at Gorermatha intersection point on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway in Mithapukur upazila here amid densely foggy weather today.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the accident occurred at around 7:30 am when four passenger buses, a pickup van, and a covered van collided on the highway. The vehicles have been removed from the scene to ensure traffic movement on the highway, as stated by Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barodorga highway police station Md Moniruzzaman.
Around 30 people were injured in the incident. Of them, 18 seriously injured passengers, including women and children, have been sent to Mithapukur Upazila Health Complex and Rangpur Medical College Hospital, OC Moniruzzaman said.
Police and local sources reported that the ill-fated vehicles lost control due to densely foggy weather at the four-way Gorermatha intersection near Shothibari area at Mithapukur upazila on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway and collided haphazardly.
‘Being informed, the Barodorga Highway Police rushed to the spot and rescued the injured. Besides, seriously injured passengers were sent to hospitals and the highway was cleared for vehicular movement,’ OC Moniruzzaman said.
Moniruzzaman noted that several accidents have occurred at different points on the Rangpur Highway area due to dense fog in recent days. He advised drivers to drive slowly and carefully by turning on their headlights.
Meanwhile, Highway Police Rangpur Region Superintendent Mohammad Tariqul Islam urged everyone to control speed and follow traffic laws while driving to avoid accidents on roads and highways in the winter season due to dense fog.
