Dhaka:A Dhaka court has ordered a 17-year-old boy, allegedly involved in a fatal car accident in Baridhara, to be sent to a child development centre in Tongi, Gazipur. The accident resulted in the death of 24-year-old construction worker Mehedi Hasan.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of Juvenile Court-8 in Dhaka made the ruling after the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Arefin Islam of Gulshan Police Station, presented the teenager in court. The judge's order followed the settlement of the case for a reported amount of Tk 800,000.
Lawyer Alamgir Hossain stated that Tk 100,000 was allocated for burial expenses, while the remainder was provided to support the deceased's elderly parents. Mehedi Hasan was struck by a private car while resting on a footpath in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone around 5:00 pm on a Tuesday. He was later declared dead at Kurmitola General Hospital.
Moktadir Islam, Mehedi's brother and the plaintiff, confirmed the settlement but did not disclose the specific amount. Bystanders detained the teenager at the scene and handed him over to the police. A case was filed at Gulshan Police Station the following day, naming Akash Mark, the vehicle's driver, as the accused. However, the teenager, who was allegedly driving, was not initially named, leading to criticism of the police.
Subsequently, Gulshan police arrested the teenager on Wednesday. When questioned about the settlement, SI Arefin Islam stated he was unaware of such an arrangement.
