Natore: The District and Sessions Judge Court in Natore has ordered the incarceration of 17 Awami League (AL) leaders, including the former chairman of Lalpur upazila parishad, in relation to a case filed under the anti-terrorism act.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, a total of 19 AL leaders and activists, led by former upazila chairman Ishaq Ali, who is also the organizing secretary of Natore district AL, surrendered before the court of District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Md Nasirul Haque. They sought bail in the ongoing legal proceedings against them.
Following a hearing, the court granted bail to two individuals while rejecting the bail petitions of the remaining 17, thereby ordering their immediate imprisonment. Inspector of Natore Court, Md Mostafa Kamal, stated that the AL leaders had previously secured ad-interim bail from the High Court and surrendered to the Judge Court as per a directive from the high court.
Prominent among those sent to jail are Ishaq Ali, president of Lalpur Upazila AL Aftab Hossain Zulfu, Chairman of Lalpur Sadar union Abu Bakar Siddque Polash, and general secretary of Lalpur Upazila Juba League Khalid Hossain. The legal case stems from a violent clash on March 31 between AL and BNP leaders and activists. The incident occurred after AL members chanted ‘Joy Bangla’ following an Eid congregation at Balitita Eidgah Maidan in the upazila.
