Sarail: A case was filed on Sunday against around 150 individuals, including leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), for allegedly obstructing newly elected Member of Parliament Rumeen Farhana from paying tribute at a Shaheed Minar in Sarail upazila and assaulting her supporters.
According to United News of Bangladesh, Ahad, a supporter of Rumeen Farhana, lodged the complaint with Sarail Police Station. The case lists former Sarail upazila BNP general secretary Anwar Hossain as the primary accused. Officer-in-Charge of Sarail Police Station Manjur Kader Bhuiyan noted that five individuals were named in the case, with an additional 140 to 150 unidentified individuals listed as accused.
The case statement alleges that when Rumeen Farhana attempted to pay her respects at the central Shaheed Minar in Sarail upazila, she encountered resistance from local BNP leaders and activists. These individuals reportedly chanted slogans against her, leading to a scuffle. The wreath brought by Rumeen was allegedly torn during the altercation. Ultimately, she exited the scene under the protection of her supporters without completing her tribute.
In response to the incident, Rumeen’s supporters staged a protest by blocking the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Shahbazpur area of Sarail around 12:30 am, causing a traffic disruption lasting nearly an hour.
Rumeen Farhana secured the Brahmanbaria 2 seat as an independent candidate in the 13th parliamentary election after being denied the BNP’s nomination. Subsequently, she was expelled from the party for running against its endorsed candidate.
