DHAKA, Mar 25, 2017 (BSS) - The 136th Assembly of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), the century-old organisation of world's legislators, will be held from April 1-5 in the capital.
Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) and the IPU are going to hold the first ever IPU assembly in Bangladesh jointly. Bangladesh Parliament Speaker and Executive Chairperson of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury would be the president of the 136thn IPU Assembly.
The general debate theme of the IPU Assembly is "Redressing inequalities: delivering on dignity and well-being for all", where around 1,500 representatives including 131 Speakers, Deputy Speakers and Parliament Members (MPs) from IPU member states are expected to join the assembly.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the five-day assembly on South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad at 7:30 pm on April 1, an official handout said.
Before launching of the assembly, members of the IPU executive committee would pay a call on with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and join photo session.
During the formal opening of the assembly, the Prime Minister would also release a commemorative postage stamp and inaugurate IPU's web television (IPU Web tv).
"Successful arrangement of the assembly would be considered as a milestone in our democratic journey and Bangladesh's image would be flourished in the world as a moderate, democratic and ideal country," the handout said.
It said IPU selected Bangladesh to be the host of its most crucial event for the first time, three years after it elected the Bangladeshi lawmaker Saber Chowdhury as the president of the global parliamentarians' forum. Currently there are 171 members and 11 associate members of the IPU.
The other programmes of the assembly will be held in five venues of Bangabanadhu International Conference Centre (BICC) while the delegates would be housed in different hotels in the city.
Besides, the commerce ministry would arrange "IPU Fair" on International Trade Fair ground adjacent to the BICC for displaying and selling Bangladeshi products.
The proposed fair would also highlight tourism in Bangladesh along with tremendous development of the present government's activities and initiatives.
Two separate assemblies of the IPU are held each year, of which one assembly is being held in March/April, hosted by a member state and another assembly holds at the IPU's headquarters in Geneva in October.
The official release said a modern makeshift media centre equipped with computers, laptops, high-speed internet bandwidth and adequate manpower would be set up at BICC for the local and foreign newsmen so that they could smoothly send their news feed.
Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, MP, IPU president Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, and secretary of IPU Martin Chungong would brief media personalities at the media centre at 9 am on March 31, it added.
