Faridpur: The 123rd birth anniversary of the eminent poet Jasimuddin, affectionately known as Palli Kabi, was commemorated in Faridpur with a series of programs designed to honor his legacy. The observance included paying respects by laying wreaths at Jasimuddin's grave, located in Gobindapur village of Ambikapur Union, which lies on the banks of the Kumar River near Faridpur town. The district administration organized a discussion and doa mahfil as part of the morning activities.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the poet's mausoleum at Ambikapur hosted another event attended by notable figures such as Faridpur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Kamrul Hasan Mollah, Superintendent of Police Md. Nazrul Islam, and Additional Deputy Commissioners Torab Hossain, Ramananda Paul, and Sushmita Saha. Other distinguished attendees included Professor M A Samad, poet and writer Mofiz Imam Milon, and Faridpur Press Club President Kabirul Islam Siddique, among others.
Various cultural and social organizations also paid floral tributes, followed by a milad and doa mahfil seeking eternal peace for the poet's soul. During the event, the Deputy Commissioner expressed how embracing the simplicity and rural themes in Jasimuddin's works could enhance societal values, urging the younger generation to appreciate and celebrate the poet's contributions.
Jasimuddin's literary works vividly depict the joys and struggles of rural life using straightforward and clear language. His renowned pieces, such as "Nakshi Kanthar Math" and "Sojan Badiar Ghat," along with his early collections, dramas, and folk music compilations, have been instrumental in bringing the essence of rural Bengal to a broader audience.
Born in 1903 at his maternal grandfather's house in Tambulkhana village, Jasimuddin's educational journey began at Faridpur Welfare School, followed by Faridpur Zilla School, and culminated with a BA and MA in Bangla from the University of Calcutta. He married Momtaz Begum in 1939, and they had three sons. Jasimuddin was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1976 and passed away on March 14 of the same year.
