Vehicular movement resumed after over 31 hours on the Kushtia-Ishwardi highway on Monday night as an LPG tanker that overturned blocking the road was removed.

The movement on the highway went back to normal around 11:30 pm after the ten-wheel truck was removed using a hydraulic crane, said Idris Ali, officer-in-charge of Chourhash highway police station.

On Sunday at 3pm, the truck owned by BEXIMCO Pharmaceuticals Ltd heading towards Natore from Mongla port overturned near the Bahalbaria area in Mirpur upazila after its driver lost control of the vehicle on the broken road, he said.

The truck lying horizontally on the road created a long tailback on both sides of the road as thousands of vehicles remained waiting, said Mohammad Saidul Alam, Kushtia Deputy Commissioner.

Later Kushtia fire service officials and crane operator from Phabna started an operation to remove the truck from the road.

Stuck in the tailback, truck driver Manik Mia, said, “I have waited for around 31 hours though some vehicles managed to move through the service road of the highway.”

The road is the only means of connection between 32 districts of northern and southern parts of the country.
