Mahmudullah Riyad and Taskin Ahmed put on a record-breaking 191-run partnership in the ninth-wicket stand of the first innings of the Harare Test against Zimbabwe Thursday.
The second-highest ninth-wicket stand in Test history helped Bangladesh post 468 runs.
Mahmudullah and Taskin fell four runs short of the 195-run ninth-wicket partnership between South Africa’s Mark Boucher and Pat Symcox during the Johannesburg Test against Pakistan in 1998.
The 191-stand between the pair is now the highest ninth-wicket partnership for the Tigers. They broke the Bangladesh record of 184 runs for the ninth wicket stand between Mahmudullah and Abul Hasan in 2012 against the West Indies in the Khulna Test.
Mahmudullah, who was out of Test matches for nearly 17 months, came to bat after the dismissal of Mominul Haque (70) and posted 138 runs in the eighth wicket stand with Liton Das (95).
Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who hit his maiden Test ton earlier this year, was dismissed for a duck.
However, Mahmudullh stood tall at the other end of the wicket and remained unbeaten on 150 off 278 with 17 fours and a six. Taskin joined forces with him in the ninth wicket stand and scored 75 off 134 balls with 11 fours. It was his maiden fifty in the international circuit.
Bangladesh lost two early wickets in this match; Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan also failed to do well.
Despite that early damage, the Tigers managed to post 468 in 126 overs.
For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani bagged four wickets; Donald Tiripano, Victor Nyauchi took two wickets each.
