Shakib Al Hasan struck twice in his second over to put Bangladesh in control while defending a big total of 171 against Sri Lanka in their first Super 12s match on Sunday at Sharjah.
At the end of the 10th over, Sri Lanka were batting at 80 for four. In the last 10 overs, Sri Lanka need to score 92 runs with six wickets in hand.
In the first ball of the ninth over, Shakib removed Pathum Nissanka for 24, and in the fourth ball, he bowled out Avishka Fernando for a duck.
Along the way, Shakib became the highest wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup surpassing Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi who has 39 wickets to his name in the highest competition of the shorter format of cricket.
After Shakib’s double blows, Mohammad Saifuddin removed Wanindu Hasaranga who had scored a fifty in Round 1.
The first wicket was taken by Nasum Ahmed who was included in this game replacing Taskin Ahmed.
Earlier, Bangladesh posted 171 for four in 20 overs while batting first after losing the toss. Mohammad Naim and Mushfiqur Rahim hit a fifty each to guide the Tigers to a challenging total.
Bangladesh have previously scored 171 or more on 11 occasions and won nine times. One of their two defeats in those matches came against Sri Lanka.
