RAB turns to parents for help to keep criminalisation at bay

Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun on Tuesday urged the parents to monitor their children in advance so that they (kids) do not get involved with any ‘teenaged gang’, militancy or drugs.

“Keep track of your child so that your affectionate children do not get involved in any crime. Loving children are becoming members of juvenile gangs, enlisting in militancy and also indulging in drugs. If you want to protect the child from these, monitor them in advance so that the kid is not endangered in any way,” he said while addressing a press conference at Rab headquarters in the city on Tuesday.

He said around 1500 militants had been arrested since the attack on Gulshan Holey Artisan Bakery cafe. Many of them have been tried, while many are languishing in jail and others freed on bail.

Five gunmen stormed the Holey Artisan Bakery cafe in the diplomatic area of Gulshan on July 1, 2016, and taking several dozen hostages. When Dhaka Metropolitan Police tried to regain control of the bakery, two police officers were shot dead. Twenty-two civilians were also killed in the clash, seventeen of whom were foreign nationals.

The RAB DG said they had arrested several financiers, including Sarwar Jahan, the mastermind of the Holey Artisan attack. RAB has arrested so far 2,500 militants.

He said that the elite force is not only continuing its operation to control militancy, they are also carrying out anti-militancy campaigns.

Mentioning that Bangladesh has become known in the world as a ‘role model’ in curbing militancy, the RAB DG said that they have recovered the new drugs DMT after Ice and LSD. So far, RAB has arrested more than 46,000 suspected drug traffickers conducting special raids across the country..

The DG said their campaign against drugs would continue. At the same time, those involved in anti-state provocations will not be spared.

RAB Additional Director General (Operations) KM Azad and Additional Director General (Administration) Imtiaz Ahmed were present at the press conference. Besides, some other senior officers of RAB headquarters were also present at the press conference.
