Organised thieves’ gang busted by DB

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a special drive in the city’s Mirpur and Uttara areas and arrested five alleged members of an organised gang along with two covered vans and 8,000 pieces of stolen export-oriented garments.

The arrested gang members were identified as Md. Sabuj, Md. Motahar Hossain, Md. Hanif, Md. Nazrul Islam and Md. Abul Kashem.

Briefing reporters at DMP media centre on Sunday, Additional Commissioner (DB) AKM Hafeez Akhter on Sunday said that 8053 pieces of jeans Men’s long pant worth Tk 60 lakh in a covered van of Manta Apparels Ltd (Envoy Group) were stolen with the help of its driver and helper recently. A case was filed with Uttara West Police Station in this regard. The DB (Motijheel Division) had started shadow investigation of the case alongside the local police station.

He said that the location of the suspected people involved in the incident was identified with the help of information technology during the investigation of the case. Later on Saturday, a team of the DB (Motijheel Division) conducted simultaneous drives in Mirpur and Uttara areas and arrested the five people and recovered the covered van along with 8,000 pieces of stolen jeans .

The chief officer of the DB said that the arrested people were involved in stealing export oriented garment products using a techniqueto steal from the carton on covered vans (30% -35%) travelling from Dhaka to Chittagong Port. After emptying the cartons of their content, the arrestees then returned the cartons to their original position inside the vehicle and the driver delivered the vehicle to its destination.

This organized gang of thieves steals goods from cartons on covered vans in connivance with the drivers and owners of the vans, Hafeez Akhter added.
