IND vs WI 2022: India Clinch ODI Series after Beating West Indies in 2nd Match

India overcame West Indies by 44 runs in the second One-Day International at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, clinching the three-match series with one game left. The match was a low-scoring day-night affair between the two teams, with India comfortably winning by defending a challenging total. The Windies’ position in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup Super-League points table has deteriorated after losing two consecutive matches. They must win the last match of the series to avoid a humiliating whitewash. The second ODI report of IND vs WI 2022 is discussed in this article.

2022 India vs West Indies ODI Series: Second Match Report

The Caribbean team management felt that chasing a total against India would be easier because the hosts have a number of world-class batters in their lineup. Therefore, West Indies Captain Nicholas Pooran asked India to bat first and they managed to score 237/9 in their allotted 50 overs in the second match of IND vs WI 2022 ODI series. West Indies were bowled out for 193 with 4 overs to spare in the chase, losing both the match and the series.

India Innings

India rested Ishan Kishan for the second ODI and hard-hitting batter Rishab Pant was moved to the top of the batting order to start the innings with skipper Rohit Sharma. However, this adjustment had no effect as India got off to a shaky start in their innings, losing Rohit, Pant, and Kohli for 43 runs in just 12 overs. Kemar Roach and Oden Smith bowled brilliantly at the start of the innings for the Windies.

KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav then rebuilt the Indian innings. They put up a 91-run partnership in the middle for the fourth wicket, bringing the total to 134 in 30 overs. The Caribbean side broke their resilience as Rahul (49) was sent back to the pavilion courtesy of a run-out.

Suryakumar Yadav (64) shared 43 runs with Washington Sundar before being dismissed in the 39th over by Fabien Allen. Two significant blows in the bottom batting order by Washington Sundar (24) and Deepak Hooda (29) helped India set a challenging 237/9 total to defend. Alzarri Joseph and Oden Smith both took two wickets for West Indies.

West Indies Innings

Shai Hope and Brandon King gave West Indies a good start with a 32-run opening partnership in the chase of 238 runs. However, the Windies innings collapsed when the star of the match pacer Prasidh Krishna joined the attack. He dismissed Brandon King and Darren Bravo in two consecutive overs, and West Indies were reduced to 38/2 in ten overs.

After that, the West Indies began to lose momentum, and they were down to 76/5 in 22 overs at one stage. At that point, India had complete control of the match and hoped to take all of the West Indies’ wickets as quickly as possible.

Shamarh Brooks (44), Akeal Hossain (34), and Oden Smith (24) all tried their best in the middle to help West Indies reach the winning target. However, their effort only narrowed the margin of loss as West Indies were all out for 193 with 24 balls to spare.

Prasidh Krishna was India’s most successful bowler in the match. His bowling figure was 9-3-12-4. Shardul Thakur also took two wickets for the hosts. The third ODI between the two teams will be played at the same venue on Friday, (February 11).

Man of the Match

Right-arm medium pacer Prasidh Krishna was awarded player of the match for his devastating bowling effort. India were able to defend a decent score thanks to Prasidh’s superb bowling.

Aftermath

The West Indian cricket team has struggled in both the ODI and Test formats in recent years. West Indies are the only team to win two T20 World Cups, indicating that most young players in the Caribbean Islands are interested in playing Twenty20 cricket due to the financial benefits. The Windies Cricket Board must take steps to revitalize the region’s cricket in all formats. The Caribbean team is presently placed eighth in the ICC Cricket World Cup Super-League points table. On the other hand, India are in third place with 69 points after winning the IND vs WI 2022 ODI Series.
