Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday said the present government is giving enough importance to technical education to build skilled human resources.

“The present government has formulated the National Education Policy 2010 under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Significant progress has been achieved in the field of primary education and gender equality in education. The government has given enough importance to technical education to build skilled human resources,” she said, joining a programme virtually.

Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE), Dhaka Ahsania Mission and CSO Alliance jointly arranged the programme to mark the golden jubilee of Bangladesh’s Independence.

The Speaker said the government has relentlessly been working to take practical steps in the education sector and the scope of technology-based education has been opened up for the students.

She said Bangladesh is celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Independence with many achievements. Soon after independence, Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman made primary education compulsory and free as part of his farsighted vision, she added.

Mentioning that Bangabandhu used to believe that spending on education is the best investment, Dr Shirin urged all to devote themselves to building an enlightened nation by bearing his (Bangabandhu’s) ideals in hearts.

The Speaker said the Father of the Nation had made the girls’ education free up to grade-VIII. He was very much aware of gender equality and education of both boys and girls, and nationalised 36,000 primary schools and the jobs of 1.5 lakh teachers.

She said Bangabandhu gave priority to education, despite the economy having been ravaged by the war and he formed the Qudrat-i-Khuda Education Commission to formulate a national education policy.

Dr Shirin said the present government is also considering whether there is a need for enactment of special laws for women and children.

Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad presided over the function moderated by Rasheda K Chowdhury.

Aroma Dutta, MP and media personality Shykh Seraj, among others, spoke at the event, said a press release.
