Impunity of the masterminds of Buet Chhatra League leader Arif Raihan Dwip, eight years into his murder at the hands of religious extremists, has engrieved former leaders of the university’s student wing of the ruling Awami League.

They also demanded that everybody involved in his murder be handed exemplary punishment in the quickest possible time.

The former Buet unit leaders of the ruling party were speaking at a virtual meeting headed by Awami League Science and Technology Secretary Md Abdus Sabur. Arif Raihan Dwip’s relatives also joined the meeting.

Abdus Sabur said the anti-liberation quarter murdered Dwip. “We have to be vocal against Hefajat, Jamaat, BNP, and extremist groups.”

He also condemned all the murders that took place in Buet.

“The prime accused Mesbah was granted bail on grounds of mental instability. But, we came to know that he got married. We demand the cancellation of Mesbah’s bail and his punishment in the quickest possible time,” said Abdus Sabur.

Even eight years into the murder of Dwip, justice has not been served yet; the prime accused is still free on bail, said the speakers.

Many cases are now being resolved at an unprecedented quick pace through speedy tribunals. But, this is not happening in the case of Arif Raihan. The delay of the trial is creating confusion among people, they said while demanding the intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On April 9, 2013, Dwip, a third-year mechanical engineering student and also Bangladesh Chhatra League leader, was hacked to death in his dormitory.

Eight days into the attack, police arrested a Buet student named Mesbah, a radical Islamist, as confirmed by his teachers and fellow students.
