BPL Football: Ctg Abahani hand Bashundhara Kings first defeat

Chittagong Abahani forced title aspirant Bashundhara Kings to taste their first defeat in the 13-team Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Football 2020-21 Sunday.

The Kings, who secured 49 points as the only unbeaten team in the league, suffered a 2-1 defeat at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in their 18th match. Chittagong Abahani moved to the fifth slot after collecting 31 points from 18 matches.

Nigerian forward Matthew Chinedu emerged as the day’s hero, scoring both goals for the port city team in the 39th and 89th minutes.

Brazilian footballer Robson Robinho got one back for the Kings in the 87th minute and he is dominating the highest goal scorers’ list with 17 individual goals in the league.

However, luck did not favour the Kings as their celebrated Argentine forward Raul Becerra spoiled the chance to score from a penalty in the 50th minute.

In the day’s other BPL match, Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra caused another upset in the league, beating six-time champions Dhaka Abahani 4-2 at the same venue in the evening.

Despite the defeat, Dhaka Abahani stayed at the second slot, with 36 points from 18 matches; Muktijoddha remained at the 11th spot after collecting 14 points from 17 matches.

Ivory Coast booter Ballo Famoussa struck twice for Muktijoddha in the 45th and 63rd minutes, while his compatriot Ibrahim Abou Dicko and Nipu added two more goals in the 17th and 84th minutes.

Sunday Chizoba scored for Abahani in the stoppage time of the first half (45+2) from a penalty. Faisal Ahmed Shitol netted the second goal for them in the stoppage time of the match (90+2).
