Bangabandhu Gymnastics: Uzbekistan emerge champions

The 5th Bangabandhu Central South Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship concluded on Sunday at the Shaheed Suhrawardi National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur with the absolute supremacy of Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan clinched the top slot securing 19 gold, 11 silver and 8 bronze medals. India became distant 2nd collecting three gold, nine silver and three bronzes while hosts Bangladesh finished 3rd with one silver and three bronze medals.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russell eclared the six-day meet closed on Sunday, organized by Bangladesh Gymnastics Federation (BGF) on the occasion of the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

BGF president Sheikh Bashir Ahmed Mamun chaired the day’s closing function.

Earlier, Bangladesh-origin Russian gymnast Margarita Mamun, who won the gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics attended meet’s inaugural function last week as the goodwill Ambassador of the tournament.

Some 170 gymnasts and officials from six countries—India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and host Bangladesh – took part in 22 events of three categories—men’s senior, men’s junior and women’s.

This was the biggest-ever International Gymnastics meet in the country after six-nation Sultana Kamal 4th Central South Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championship held in 2011.
