Dhaka: President Mohammed Shahabuddin today emphasized that the simple and selfless life, strong personality, unquestionable integrity, and pragmatic statesmanship of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman would remain eternally alive in the hearts of the people. Ziaur Rahman’s eventful life, profound patriotism, uncompromising stance against corruption, commitment to justice and fairness, vision of a self-reliant Bangladesh, and enduring ideals would continue to inspire the younger generation, he stated.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the President issued this statement in a message on the eve of the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. Paying respect to Ziaur Rahman, the President remarked that he fell victim to an anti-state conspiracy and was assassinated at the Chattogram Circuit House on May 30, 1981.
President Shahabuddin noted that the nation remembers Ziaur Rahman for his contributions as a freedom fighter, proclaimer of independence, introducer of multi-party democracy, architect of modern Bangladesh, and visionary statesman. At the beginning of the Liberation War in 1971, Ziaur Rahman called for armed struggle against the Pakistani forces, inspiring the nation to participate actively. His courage and contribution earned him the gallantry title of ‘Bir Uttam’.
The President highlighted Ziaur Rahman’s establishment of multi-party democracy, freedom of speech, and press freedom. He united the nation under Bangladeshi nationalism and implemented plans to boost socio-economic development and improve living standards. Ziaur Rahman’s 19-point programme aimed to build a self-reliant Bangladesh.
The balanced foreign policy adopted by Ziaur Rahman, particularly in opening overseas labour markets in the Middle East, was also noted by the President. Although Ziaur Rahman’s tenure was short, his leadership advanced Bangladesh with patriotism, justice, dedication, and foresight, leaving a lasting legacy.
