Jhalakathi: Prime Minister's Special Assistant on Health Affairs S M Ziauddin Hyder today highlighted the pivotal role played by Shaheed Ziaur Rahman in establishing multi-party democracy in Bangladesh. Speaking at a discussion and doa mahfil organized by Jhalakathi BNP and its affiliated organizations at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium, Hyder paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman on his 45th martyrdom anniversary.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Hyder emphasized that Ziaur Rahman was the first elected president of the country, and he dedicated his life to preserving the nation's independence, sovereignty, and democratic values. Hyder noted that Ziaur Rahman, a courageous military officer, inspired the nation by declaring independence during the Liberation War and played a significant role in reforming the political system.
Hyder elaborated on Ziaur Rahman's efforts to restore multi-party democracy, ensuring citizens could freely express their opinions. He underscored Zia's commitment to involving the public in national development and governance, with core principles centered around nationalism, democracy, development, and self-reliance.
The special assistant highlighted Ziaur Rahman's groundbreaking initiatives to boost the economy, agriculture, industry, and infrastructure during his tenure. Programs like canal excavation significantly increased agricultural productivity, while encouragement for homestead cultivation led to enhanced food production.
Hyder also spoke about Ziaur Rahman's vision for economic progress through the expansion of exports, the promotion of the ready-made garment industry, and the establishment of Export Processing Zones, aiming for a self-reliant and respected Bangladesh on the global stage.
He called for more research on Ziaur Rahman's life and contributions, urging the youth to learn from his vision and work. Hyder emphasized that Ziaur Rahman's contributions to democracy and national interests should be highlighted for future generations.
Turning to the present, Hyder mentioned that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, son of Shaheed Zia, prioritizes national development over revenge politics. Tarique Rahman focuses on economic growth, job creation, and improvements in education and healthcare.
Hyder conveyed Tarique Rahman's commitment to a modern, developed Bangladesh, referencing his return statement, "I have a plan, we have a plan." Former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia's patriotism and commitment to democracy were also lauded.
Hyder outlined the government's plans for a massive tree plantation program, canal and river re-excavation, and environmental protection to combat climate change and foster sustainable development.
Ziaur Rahman remains a symbol of Bangladesh's independence and democracy, Hyder concluded, noting his leadership during national crises and ongoing inspiration for the BNP's pursuit of a self-reliant, democratic nation.
Jhalakathi-1 MP Rafiqul Islam Jamal and Jhalakathi-2 MP Israt Sultana Elen Bhutto also spoke at the event, chaired by former Jhalakathi District BNP President Mostafa Kamal Montu. The event concluded with special prayers for the soul of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
