Sonagazi: Environment, Forest, and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo today stated that Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman made a significant contribution to the country by establishing multi-party democracy during a period when democratic practices were absent. "Ziaur Rahman not only declared the country's independence but also fought in the Liberation War and played a crucial role in securing Bangladesh's freedom," he remarked during a discussion at the Sonagazi Municipal Auditorium.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event was organized by Sonagazi Upazila and Municipal BNP to mark the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Ziaur Rahman, with Upazila BNP Convener Zainal Abedin Bablu presiding. Mintoo emphasized that Ziaur Rahman guided the nation towards development and was instrumental in its progress. "His contributions to the nation are beyond measure," he added.
Mintoo also recounted the period following Ziaur Rahman's assassination, noting that BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia assumed the party's leadership and later served as prime minister, playing a key role in the country's development. He mentioned that the people subsequently entrusted the BNP with the responsibility of governing the country once again.
The minister highlighted the ongoing contributions of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, stating that he is carrying forward the legacy of his parents and working to advance the nation. He urged party leaders and activists to remain united for the greater interest of the country, acknowledging that while competition within the BNP is natural as the country's largest political party, it should not evolve into hostility.
Addressing social challenges, Mintoo spoke about issues like drug abuse and juvenile gangs, which he said have spread across the country. He alleged that the previous government had contributed to the moral degradation of society. He stressed that parents, teachers, and community leaders must play a proactive role in addressing these challenges.
The minister also discussed the government's launch of the "Notun Kuri Sports" programme aimed at encouraging young people to engage in sports and cultural activities. "Through this initiative, children and adolescents will benefit both psychologically and physically," he stated.
The programme was attended by various BNP leaders, including District BNP Convener Sheikh Farid Bahar, Member Secretary Alal Uddin Alal, and others. Upazila BNP Member Secretary Syed Alam Bhuiyan moderated the discussion. A prayer was offered for the eternal peace of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, followed by the distribution of clothes among underprivileged and destitute people.
