Dhaka: A Chattogram court today awarded a man life-term in jail and additional six months in case of defaulting fine Tk 20,000 in a child rape case. Judge Syeda Hafsa Jhuma of the Chattogram Metropolitan Child Violence Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict in the presence of the convict.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the convict, Akhtar Sardar (24), is the son of Md. Sattar Sardar, a resident of Kukraparshi under the Jamalganj police station in Sunamganj district. The case details reveal that the victim was a fourth-grader at the time of the incident in 2022. Her parents worked as day laborers while Akhtar, who lived nearby, frequently visited the victim's home located in the Sadarghat police station area of Chattogram city.
On July 2, 2022, Akhtar found the child alone at home and raped her. He then threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident to anyone. The victim was later admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for treatment, as per the case statement.
Following the incident, the victim's father, Monir Hossain, lodged a complaint with the Sadarghat Police Station. The charge sheet was submitted to the court on November 21, 2023, and the trial commenced on April 15, 2024, after the charges were formally framed.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Mahmud-ul Alam Chowdhury Maruf stated that after the delivery of the verdict, the convict was sent to jail.
