Sylhet: A young woman was reportedly gang-raped after being held captive for 13 days at a house near the Kanaighat border in Sylhet. This incident occurred after she was pushed back into Bangladesh from India. Police have detained Naim Uddin, a 22-year-old from Dana Pattipara village in Kanaighat upazila, in connection with the case, as confirmed by Kanaighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the 20-year-old woman from Sherpur district had illegally entered India through the Satkhira border about nine months ago and had been working in the clothing business in Hyderabad. On August 20, while attempting to return to Bangladesh with the aid of a relative named Jahangir, she was apprehended by India's Border Security Force (BSF). On humanitarian grounds, BSF opted not to detain her but instead sent her back to Bangladesh via the Dana border in Kanaighat, as reported by locals.
After re-entering Bangladesh, the woman was allegedly misled by six young men, including Shanur Ahmed, Naim Uddin, and Kawsar, who promised to assist her in getting home but instead abducted her. They reportedly took her to Shanur's house, where they confined and gang-raped her for 13 days.
The woman managed to escape on Wednesday with the assistance of local Union Parishad Member Nazim Uddin and subsequently filed a case at Kanaighat Police Station. Police promptly initiated an operation, resulting in the arrest of Naim Uddin. The woman has been admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for medical examination, while police continue efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects.
