Harare: Bangladesh Under-19 team made a winning start to the tri-nation tournament, edging South Africa youngsters by 1-wicket in a thrilling contest at Harare, Zimbabwe yesterday (Saturday). Hosts Zimbabwe are also involved in the tournament apart from Bangladesh and South Africa.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, electing to bat first, South Africa were bowled out for just 128 in 34.4 overs with Al Fahad wreaking havoc on the Proteas by claiming 4-32. His four wickets also included South African opener Jorich Van Schalwyk, who previously made history by becoming the first cricketer to hit a double century in youth-level cricket. Thanks to his record-breaking double ton, South Africa had thrashed Zimbabwe by 278 runs in the opening game of the tournament.
However, in this match, Van Schalwyk could only manage 10 runs, and his side could not withstand the pressure from the Bangladesh youngsters, who defied the nerve-wracking moments to seal the victory in 28.4 overs with just one wicket in hand. Samiun Basir led the charge for Bangladesh, staying cool under pressure to secure the win, remaining not out on 45.
South Africa's bowling attack was led by JJ Basson, who took 4-33, while his new-ball partner Bayanda Majola grabbed 3-35. Bangladesh will now face Zimbabwe in their next game tomorrow (Monday) at the same venue. The double-leg tournament format sees each team face off against each other twice in the group phase, after which the top two teams will advance to the final.
Earlier, Bangladesh had triumphed over South Africa in a three-match youth ODI series, winning 2-1.
