Dhaka: World Maritime Day 2025 will be observed tomorrow, as elsewhere in the world, with the theme ‘Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity’. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has issued a message in this regard.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Professor Yunus emphasized that World Maritime Day is observed annually to highlight the importance of shipping safety, maritime security, and the protection of the marine environment. He pointed out that the day acknowledges the vital role of the maritime industry in global trade and the world economy.

Each year, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) selects a theme to address the challenges and issues facing the maritime sector. This year’s theme, ‘Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity’, is particularly significant, said Professor Yunus. He noted that oceans are a crucial source of food for billions and produce half the oxygen we breathe. Oceans also host countless marine species and support millions of jobs and livelihoods globally, offering immense economic opportunities.

Professor Yunus highlighted that international shipping, as the most cost-effective mode of global transportation, plays a key role in facilitating international trade, driving economic growth and prosperity worldwide. On this occasion of World Maritime Day 2025, he urged all maritime stakeholders to act responsibly to preserve oceans and marine ecosystems. He called for a commitment to adopting, implementing, and enforcing necessary regulations and guidelines to honor obligations and safeguard the underwater world.
