Accra:The World Food Day 2026 was observed in Bangladesh with a focus on agricultural innovation, food security, and ensuring access to nutritious food. The Ministry of Agriculture, in collaboration with the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and other partners, organized a national seminar at the auditorium of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the event emphasized innovation, investment, and cooperation to enhance food production and nutrition in the country. This observance comes at a time when Bangladesh continues to face challenges in food access.
During the seminar, the FAO presented a roadmap aimed at ensuring adequate, safe, and nutritious food while also preserving the environment. This plan combines innovative solutions with traditional knowledge to address food security challenges.
FAO's September country brief, referring to an analysis by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), projected that approximately 18.1 million people in Bangladesh are expected to experience crisis-level or worse acute food insecurity from September to December 2026. The worsening situation is attributed to reduced household purchasing power, high inflation, and flood-related damage affecting livelihoods in certain areas.
In a message marking World Food Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted that around 645 million people faced hunger, and nearly 2.7 billion people could not afford a healthy diet last year. He urged for increased investment and cooperation to enhance access to nutritious food and advocated for the use of data, technology, and innovation to strengthen food systems.
The event was attended by government officials, researchers, development partners, farmers' representatives, and private-sector participants.
