Dhaka: The World Food Day 2025 will be observed across the nation tomorrow, echoing global efforts to underscore the theme “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future.” The event emphasizes the importance of collective action in building a sustainable and food-secure world.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, World Food Day, first celebrated in 1979, occurs annually on October 16 to raise awareness about hunger and to encourage actions towards future food safety globally. This year, the observance is jointly organized by the Agriculture Ministry and the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
The global community recognizes that the world produces sufficient food to feed its population, and food is deemed the third most basic human necessity after air and water. It is also regarded as a basic human right under the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights and two legally-binding international covenants. The day will unite the global community in the fight to ensure the right to food for everyone.
In light of the ongoing challenges of food insecurity, malnutrition, and climate change, this year’s World Food Day will focus on the right to diverse, nutritious, affordable, and safe foods, aiming for a better quality of life and a brighter future for all.
To commemorate the day, the Agriculture Ministry has organized various activities, including an international seminar, mass awareness programs, and the publication of special supplements in major newspapers. Posters, billboards, video messages, and documentations have also been disseminated to highlight the day’s significance.
A day-long international seminar is scheduled at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) in the city tomorrow at 10 am. Food Secretary M Masudul Hasan will attend as the chief guest, with Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Abu Taher Mohammad Zaber, FAO representative in Bangladesh Dr Dia Sanou, and IFAD country director Dr Valantine Achancho serving as special guests. The seminar will be presided over by the additional secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, M Abu Zubair Hossain Bablu.
