Chandpur: A woman was killed and four others were injured when a truck collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Chandpur on Sunday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mahinur Begum, 38, wife of Nasir Tapadar of Tarpurchandi village under Tarpurchandi Union in Sadar upazila.
According to United News of Bangladesh, eyewitnesses reported that the auto-rickshaw was traveling from Bakila in Hajiganj towards Chandpur. As the driver attempted to overtake another auto-rickshaw, it collided head-on with a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction around 2:30 pm in the Debpur area of the Chandpur-Cumilla regional highway. The impact caused the auto-rickshaw to overturn into a roadside ditch, resulting in Mahinur's immediate death at the scene.
Her younger brother Md Yunus, 28, was among those injured. The identities of the other injured individuals could not be immediately confirmed. Fayez Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Chandpur Sadar Model Police Station, stated that police seized both the truck and the auto-rickshaw following the accident. Local residents apprehended the truck driver and his helper, handing them over to the police, although the auto-rickshaw driver fled the scene.
The deceased's body was sent to the Chandpur Sadar Hospital morgue, as confirmed by the OC. The incident is under investigation, and legal action will be pursued as necessary.
