Dhaka: The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking the government to explain why the dismissal of Dhaka University (DU) teacher Wasel Bin Sadat, following allegations of sexually harassing a female student, should not be declared illegal. The rule was issued by the HC bench of Justice Khizir Ahmed Choudhury and Justice AFM Saiful Karim after a preliminary hearing of a writ petition filed in this regard.
According to United News of Bangladesh, the legal proceedings began when a student from BRAC University accused Wasel Bin Sadat of sexual harassment. The incident allegedly took place in August 2023, when the student visited Professor Sadat's office to submit her thesis. At the time, he was serving as an external faculty member for a course at BRAC University. The complaint detailed that during the meeting on August 15, Professor Sadat behaved inappropriately, subjecting the student to both verbal and physical harassment.
In response to these allegations, BRAC University authorities initially suspended Sadat. Following further investigations, he was dismissed from his teaching position on August 4, 2025. Advocate Murad Hossain represented the petitioner during the High Court hearing, where the legality of the dismissal was challenged. The court has now called upon the government to provide an explanation, as the legal process continues to unfold.
