Gosairhat: National Parliament Whip and MP for Shariatpur-3, Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Opu, today inaugurated the excavation work of the Pokhomshar Canal in Nager Para Union of Gosairhat Upazila. The launch is part of a government initiative focused on canal excavation, re-excavation, and renovation, aligning with the special priority projects endorsed by the Prime Minister and the EGPP programme.
According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahmed, while speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony, highlighted that martyred President Ziaur Rahman had initially introduced canal excavation programmes to address the nation's food crisis. He remarked on the success of the past initiative and criticized the discontinuation by previous governments, which he claimed led to the country's desertification.
Mia Nuruddin Ahmed further mentioned that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has initiated a new canal excavation programme. He expressed his commitment to completing development activities in every union of the Shariatpur district within the next two years, emphasizing the importance of public cooperation.
The event was chaired by the Shariatpur Deputy Commissioner, with Gosairhat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Nusrat Ara Khanam delivering the welcome address. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Mia Nuruddin Ahmed symbolically inaugurated the programme by personally cutting soil. Additionally, the guests participated in planting three fruit-bearing trees beside the canal.
